Used to be great w/ very knowledgeable fish staff. Recently sold special ordered fish i prepaid for to someone else. Recently had reptiles in completely unacceptable conditions. Axolotls cohabbed, feet/gills eaten off. Bearded dragon very thin, zero lighting, let alone 100% necessary uvb light. Approximately 5ft long boa in a 40 or 55 gallon tank, unable to move, only room to curl up under far too small a hide. Very angry. Should not be able to have reptiles. As an experienced reptile keeper & veterinary nurse, they should be ashamed & cease housing reptiles completely. I will never shop here or recommend them again. Stay far away.
Been there a few times and every time I saw full tanks of fish with ich disease for sale. The tanks are dirty and difficult to see the fish, and the fish room definitely needs some remodeling or something, everything dirty, the floor around the angels and discus tanks is coming apart and not safe to walk. Please separate the sick fish in a quarantine tanks or at least don’t sell them, I saw the customer purchasing fish full covered in ich disease.
This was a great overall experience. My wife and i have been looking into salt water and fresh water fish for months and could not figure out what we wanted. After several other fish stores without any help from the staff we found captain nemos. John helped us and he was so patient with us. Within 30 minutes he helped answer everything that confused us to finally settle on and ) enjoy our new fish tank. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable and can help you get the things you need for your tank even if they dont have it at the store. We are excited to go back as we grow our salt water tank!
The negative reviews are pretty accurate. Way overpriced. The online fish stores put this store to shame. Can get better quality fish overnight shipping. The employees are anything but friendly. And in most cases, simply jerks. They appear knowledgeable, however have provided incorrect information a few times now. Not concerned with providing positive customer service at all. And I experienced the once you buy it, its yours, and no guarantees philosophy once as well. And when theyre not in the store being miserable to customers, theyre outside smoking while there are a line of people inside waiting to be helped. I shopped here for a few months before I finally had enough. Smug, condescending, miserable, poor business standards. Try online, or travel a bit to find a different store.
I went there expecting to be underwhelmed after reading all the negative reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. The store is clean, well-organized, and very attractive, with a lot of display tanks throughout. The staff were friendly and helpful. They did give a little wrong information but also a lot of very good information. They have a good range of products for things like plants and aquarium substrate that you cant find other places. If you go, check out their filtration systems - their tank set-ups are pretty amazing.I thought the fish looked very healthy. The day I went I didnt see a sick or dead fish in the whole store. We wound up buying a guppy and it is thriving with no problems.
This place is huge. Just a little dark in the inside. Staff seems nice. They have a large collection of salt and fresh water. I like the aquatic plant section but I think it need some caring there. Plants seems a little dead and not well care for. The day I was there I didnt see much fish left in the fresh water area... Maybe they didnt get the supply in yet. I will have to return at another day and see. The price is fair.
You cant go wrong here with the knowledge the main staff has with fish and aquarium questions. My reef tank that I bought here has never looked better...18 months in. Matt and the staff have always answered all my questions and went out of there way to help with any problem I had.To set up a reef tank with fish and corals is no easy task for a beginner, but with the help from the staff here my tank looks great!I dont know how you could write a bad review about them, they take the time to answer all your questions and make sure you have all the right stuff to do what you need. Im sure if you waited for your turn they would have given you the same level of service.
Nice large selection of fish and tank equipment. A bit overpriced. My complaint is with the staff. There were like 10 people working in the store and, while each one seemed friendly, their knowledge didnt seem to go very far. 20 minute drive one way and was sold the wrong stuff even though I insisted they were wrong and three of them insisted they werent. I trusted their expertise and I shouldnt have! Go here for fish only maybe? Even then, dont trust what they say. Good supplies, bad information!
Not really that impressive a lot of empty tanks. Plant tanks were mostly empty and a lot were overpriced and also infested with snails. Prices were high for a lot of the livestock and plants. Tanks and whole store just dirty and the big centerpiece tank was completely empty dark and dirty. Gets three stars because employees were kind and quick to help with getting fish.
This store has fish you dont typically see elsewhere. I have three large specialty stores in my area and this is the one I go to when I want hard to get central Americans cichlids. The owner and Mark are incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help. They do get busy at times but it is a huge aquarium specialty store with a huge stock with varying needs. Ive personally never waited more than 10 minutes to get what I wanted or ask a question. More importantly this is the only store I have ever seen a tank full of grammodes, thats reason enough to go back.
Extremely kind and knowledgeable. Tested my aquarium water for me and explained my water parameters. Helped me pick out plants and fish. Overall great experience. Huge selection and much higher quality than a big chain pet store such as petco. Hands down my favorite fish store in the area.
Lots of paraphernalia!! Staff was very nice. One little turtle in particular I wished I could have taken home. All types of fish 🐟🐠🐚🐌 and it was awesome. They have food for all types of animals and a plentiful stock. There are snakes in the back that made the visit more awesome! Great visit!
Ive been going to this store for years and have spent thousands of dollars here. Matt and John have a ton of knowledge, especially when it comes to saltwater reef tanks. Ask some questions and these guys wont steer you in the wrong direction. They have the best selection of saltwater fish and African cichlids in the area. If you had a bad experience in the past give them another try...They went through a management change a while back and they are a much improved store since then.
Huge selection of fish. I had noticed several things. The major thing was there was a turtle, stuck between two tanks. Under a heating lamp. It must have climbed up on the rocks and flipped over. I told an employee and he was shocked. He did seem very upset about. As was I, especially because he said it had been there longer than he has worked there. I’m not sure how the staff would not notice that a turtle was missing. There was only 3-4 in the tank so it would be a big difference. Turtle had been sitting in between two tanks, dead, for weeks. If the tanks had been looked at by employees, they would have seen the turtle. It was not hidden. Poor thing. Another thing, a door to an “employees only” room was open. I glanced in and noticed several squished fish on the floor. They had been stepped on. Not sure why they had not been saved or properly disposed of. I was very upset leaving the store. Hopefully they will not lose any more reptiles or fish that way.Puddles all over the floor, step stools, and boxes everywhere. It was so dark in there. Prices were written on the tank with dry erase markers, could not tell which fish was which from the lists (some had at least 5 different kinds). The main tank was disgusting. Looked like it had never been clean. I could only find 2. I remember going there a while back to see the shark tank all lit up, clean, and full of fish. I’m not sure what happened.
I live nearby and love going to check out the fish! They have reptiles, but Ill be focusing on fish. Theres always knowledgeable staff who love the hobby. They have the largest selection of marine and freshwater fish in the area. Theyre shifting their focus back to fish and just put in a big frag tank (coral). Theres a good selection of local frozen foods and they do have copepods. Theres a very good selection of chemicals. They have a surprising amount of equipment and tanks given the footprint of the store. Hands down the best in the area.
I couldnt be more pleased with our experience at... I guess its called Natural Pet by Pets Plus, now. I came in looking for a few aquarium plants, and I was impressed by both the quality of plants and the variety of species. They had several species I havent seen anywhere but online, and I much prefer to pick out plants myself rather than ordering them. Their tanks looked healthy with a solid variety of fish, they had some great example setups going, their hardware selection was great, and my husband and daughter enjoyed looking at the shark and at the other fish while I shopped. Also, the guy who helped us was extremely knowledgeable about fish keeping, which was a refreshing change from some stores in the area. The only downside was that we did have to wait a while for someone to help us.It was a great experience and well worth the half-hour drive from our house!
So... During our first visit to this store, you could definitely see what some of the previous reviews were referring to. However, I do think things may be on the mend. The fish seemed healthy and cared for. The staff was attentive and decently friendly. Prices were also comparable to other fish/pet stores. So, while the store did appear a bit disheveled, everything else seemed to be on the up-and-up. Will probably go back.
I have my own fish tank, they have a wide selection of fish but last time I was there there wasnt enough staff, and when I was approached by a staff member they did not know much about the fish. Nonetheless it is a friendly environment there which I love. I will definitely be back.
I read the reviews and thought it cant be that bad. So on 4/2/16 we took the 45 minute drive to the store. I got scared the moment I saw the shark tank. The tanks were a disgrace, stains inside, look like mold and mildew, signage for name and price (fish overpriced) was written on blue painters tape (which was not legible and barely could see) how can you tell which fish is what without pictures. Their back room with the filtering system looked like a disaster area. I saw some sort of foam on the unit that was leaning. I have no clue why anyone would patronage this store in those horrible conditions , it should be condemned. Im not sure if they still let parents give kids parties there, Im surely hoping not the sight of the store would scare them for life. Please someone call L&I. If you dont believe my review go see for yourself. I will never ever ever go back there again. Wish I could give the rating a 0 star.
I love this store but the only thing is that in the fish holding area really does not look as good as in the front of the store. All i gonna say is that you guys have a very unique store as no other store truly shows its filtration system so openly which is why i wanna keep on coming back but i wont because of my mother makes the decisions so if she thinks that the store isnt good enough then you will lose a customer. If you would just keep things much more clean and organized then that part of the store would be even more beautyful then what it is. Other then that i am very happy with your workers and what they do to be able to help me and my mother to help me.
With the reviews ranging from terrible to great I had to go and check it out. My review is very good. Lots of selection; especially of freshwater fish and plants (which are my main interests). Plus a lot of higher end accessories that you wont necessary find in the big box pet stores. It is a bit disorganized as one reviewer mentioned and maybe not sparkling clean, but the livestock is in good shape and appears to be well taken care of. I didnt do a lot of price comparison, but the tanks and stands seemed fairly priced. I will certainly go back. Plus Lees Hoagie shop is right next door.
Mark Denaro was phenomenal in his dedication to our students on our marine science field trip. So many amazing species to look at and choose from. The whole place was very well kept. It was clean and the staff were extremely helpful. Mark took the time to teach our students about coral growth as well as the chemistry of a saltwater tank. Our families in the southeast region of PA will definitely be shopping here for their pet supplies.
Brought my kids in to purchase an LED Glo Fish Tank Kit - was helped by a nice sales person who seemed pretty knowledgable. Was happy with purchase until my husband brought the tank home, spent over an hour setting it all up only to discover that the bottom of it had a leak which got water all over my daughters dresser / rug / room. Called the store back to tell them of the situation. Was told they probably had another kit and to come in and exchange. When my husband got there the owner / manager was nasty and basically accused my husband of doing something wrong because that has never happened before - just plain rude! We wont be going back there to purchase the fish for the tank.
While I understand what some of the people here are saying, I dont understand the harshness of the reviews. Yes, they are a little disorganized, but it is improving. And also, yes in the many, many tanks you see there may be one or two dead fish, however it is normally because those were feeder fish in a tank with a predator fish.I find the staff there to be very kind and informative. They are knowledgeable about all kinds of animals and are very friendly. I own a ferret and after talking with them have since switched my ferrets food to a more suitable food. They even allowed my ferret to come into the store and socialize with the other ferret in there. All in all, this store is wonderful, albeit a little unorganized, but overall a fun place to shop and be in.
I went there to check it out and I was amazed! To be honest, I was a little wary at first from reading the reviews but they were all proved outdated or wrong! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The two fish guys that were working were INCREDIBLY knowledgeable. They had an amazing selection of saltwater and freshwater fish, corals, etc. I will DEFINITELY be going back!
When I first walked in five years ago, I though this place was great. Its gone downhill fast though. In 2006, I bought two turtles, which ended up dying within two months from pre-existing infections and cases of worms. Many vet trips and much fighting later, they offered a replacement turtle. I picked it up the day it came in, and it has since been doing fine. I found out at this time, that their animals are caught in the wild and shipped in bulk - a practice I have never condoned and was originally told was not the case. I stopped buying their mulch (same stuff they keep their reptiles in) after finding mites and construction debris in it. Ive purchased heat bulbs there that didnt work, only to be told afterward that they do not allow returns on them - a practice they now post on signs ever since I fought them on it. Now yesterday I went in interested in fish (since that seemed to be their one strength), and the store was a complete mess. At 2:30pm, there were (multiple) dead fish in most of the aquariums, the store was extremely hot and humid, only the front half of the store was lit, there were puddles all over the floor, stools and boxes in the middle of the aisles, and it gets worse from there. I genuinely felt bad for the animals. This place has become a dump at best. The only reason to go is to see the (dirty) shark tank and the two-headed turtle if that interests you. I personally will not be returning.
It bothers me that this place... now called natural pet has bad reviews. I stopped in with my girlfriend and couldnt believe the place. they had a giant shark tank. huge selection of fish, tanks, live rock and plants etc. the service and advice was second to none. and pricing was very fair. place was just about as clean as you can expect a big fish store to be. but the fish were all very healthy. thats all that matters
Big store with large selection, but awfully run place. I wonder who owns it since he should either fire the manager or sell it to someone whos willing to run a proper business. Try calling them and see if anyone ever answers the phone. You walk in and the place has this huge centerpiece tank thats in complete dark with nothing living inside. Many tanks they have are either empty or broken. Looked around for a bit and finally wanted dozen of schooling fish but couldnt find any help but this guy with mustache in tank top just sitting in the corner or outside smoking, but apparently he works there but not really interested in working. An older gentleman finally came out from the back and got him to helped me get what I was looking for. Friendly guy, but if customer is walking around for 10 minutes, you should be inclined to assist or ask, no?
This store is great. Lot of interesting fish including a wide assortment of Africans, South Americans and your common community fish (saltwater too). I am always amazed in the oddball fish they sometimes have. For example, when I was there last, they had Crenicichla Notophthalmus - What a cool fish! Also the big tanks along the right wall often have large/rare fish that are cool to check out. There are a few people who work there who are very knowledgeable about fish and they are very willing to help you figure out what would fit your needs. I got my Frontosa there in 2014 and he has been extremely health and beautiful ever since.Sure, this store is not as clean as the Hidden Reef but it is still worth a visit. I believe it has been through a few ownership changes but if quality fish is what you are looking for they have it here.
Large selection of fish and supplies. Knowledgeable. Best place in the Philadelphia area for salt water needs. Minus one star because they never seem to have the exact species Im looking for when Im looking for it, but when I go back unprepared to buy a new critter they suddenly have them in stock.
3 stars- Great selection of fish.1 star - terrible customer service. Was in the store for over an hour before someone asked if I needed help and then he didnt know anything about the plants I was asking about. Was then given plants that were covered in aphids. Another man came over (manager maybe) and told the guy not to get the plants from where he got mine bc they are covered in aphids but still gave me the aphid covered plants and told me to rinse them well. Not even 2 weeks later all of the plants, except 1, are dead.Looked at fish for about a half hour... A few employees walked by me but didnt ask if I had questions or wanted any fish. When I decided what I wanted to get it took me like 10 mins to find someone to get the fish.
We really appreciate the service we receive whenever we stop in. We live 45 minutes away but the service, variety of fish and overall knowledge are worth the extra travel time. We were recently inspired to set up a plant aquarium after seeing an incredible display tank created by a store employee named Hong. His knowledge of the plants and fish were beyond impressive and he was more than helpful! If you want some expert advice about starting a tank or resolving issues with an existing tank, see Hong! Overall, these guys know their fish!
I do not like to write bad reviews but I have to say I felt absolutely nauseous after being in this store for 5 minutes. It was horribly dirty and the poor fish were in abysmal tanks. This place should be condemned. The tanks were filthy, the wood cabinetry that housed the tanks were rotten and falling apart. The smell is terrible. I am not a huge fish lover but I left feeling sick to my stomach over the life these fish were given there. Someone should report them to animal services.
Excellent selection of corals and other salt water, a good LFS for sure. Dont let any silly ratings/reviews turn you away, some people will complain just to pass the time these days...and then there is the usual stupidity factor with people on the internet...just use common sense if your coming from far away and call to see if they have new stock beforehand, theyll be able to tell you when the last shipment of fish or corals came in. I bought my glass aquarium and my fish there, as well as most of my corals. I go weekly for pre-mixed saltwater and RO. They have a good selection of frozen foods and the good supplements too. I dont do freshwater but they have a ton of variety and a longtime pro on staff who specializes in it. They also have a big pet section, you can get interesting dog treats and health foods etc. There is also a Lees Hoagies right next door!!!!
I would not recommend buying from here. The saltwater fish are overpriced and very poor quality. They run the store like they are trying to make a quick dollar, with little regard to their livestock. I used to shop here back when it was called Big Als. They used to have amazing shipments of fish, it seems to have declined over the years since then. There are plenty of other fish stores in the area that I would recommend over Captain Nemos.
I used to be an avid aquarist, but I havent been active lately because I havent found the selection of fish available at local pet stores too appealing, so I was pretty excited to find an aquarium superstore in the area. Specializing in tropical fish, surely they would carry a wider variety of fish, including my favorites, right? Wrong. They may have more fish, but I didnt see any more species represented than Ive found at the other pet stores. The species Im looking for are not even that rare. The mall pet store where I used to work carried them on a regular basis. Not this place though.Still looking for that place that caters to the discriminating tropical fish hobbyist. This isnt it.
Will never shop there again! Very rude staff. Bought an LED aquarium light fixture for $280, and after a couple weeks it was no longer working correctly....tried to return fixture and they would not exchange. The Kid at the front desk who seemed clueless said he had to ask the manager.....after waiting 15 minutes or more the kid came back to me and said the manager said he couldnt exchange and advised me to call the manufacture..I asked to talk to the manager directly but was told he was on the phone in the back. I waited for another 15 mins and still no manager so I decided to walk towards the back and find the manager. I found a guy in the back of the store selling someone a lizard and asked him for the manager, he said he was the manager.....I presented my request to him directly and he said in a sarcastic way that he couldnt exchange because he didnt know what I did to the fixture for it not to work properly. What a friggin joke to undermine a customer and to have a condescending attitude. When it comes to customer service ....I know that with this kind of service, they wont last long! I called the manufacture as was suggested and they were a lot more considerate and accommodating. NEVER GOING BACK!
I had an appointment scheduled with a specialist here to assist me with my saltwater tank - My clownfish was doing very poorly. The earliest he wanted to come out was a week (even though I explained it was a matter of life or death for the fish), and then the day of, he ended up cancelling - something about an emergency somewhere else. What about my emergency? He said he would call back and he never did. I ended up using using someone else.
They are the only pet store that knows what they are talking about. Everywhere else they will make stuff up or in my case fail to mention important information to keep your pets alive. This store makes sure you know and get everything you need. They know good costumer service
Horrible customer service employees are very rude not one of them stopped to ask if i needed help instead they were playing on there phones and sitting outside. The health of their fish was horrible the tanks were dirty and very cloudy water and way over priced asking 50 dollars for fish i can get for 15 bucks anywere else i will not be going back anymore now that it is pets natural they are horrible

2020-07-28Not from area, passing thru & found by surprise. Initial impression appeared there would be a wide varied selection of fresh & salt water fish. Not sure if its due to Covid-19 but far too many tanks were empty, under construction, or full of plants. They have fresh & salt water fish including pond koi. I was surprised by the amount of competitively priced turtles & tortoises available. Also had beautiful blue tongued skink & chameleons. They have wide selection of aquarium & pond meds, treatments, essentials. They Also offered cat & dog products. It was very sad to see stunning circular centerpiece tank dark & empty. Overall good place to check out in the area but would call for needs before traveling long distance.

2020-08-06This store features a wide variety of pet supplies, including corals, salt and freshwater fish and invertebrates. All employees Ive encountered in my visits are kind and helpful, and they definitely have great deals. Got a beautiful tank at least a year or two ago, along with all necessary supplies and it has all functioned beautifully. A great store with plenty of stock and knowledgeable staff, love it here!

2021-09-28I love that they have the less common/high quality brands of pet food that we use. The location is great and they always help you to your car if your purchase is heavy.

2019-11-19Really enjoyed my time spent here. Well knowledge staff also very friendly and willing to help. Had one on one interaction with the owner great guy willing to help. Also worked out a way to hold a fairly expensive fish for me till I had the exact funds. Fish is happy and healthy and also had the decency to make sure the fish was going to a good home.
