This cafe is a latte heaven if ever there was one! The mexican mocha and the nutella mocha were simply amazing. Gotta try each and every one including the variety of hot chocolate and other drinks (chai cider does sound interesting). They do have food options as well which I did not try - with a mix of wraps, salads.Spacious and lots of varied seating configurations. Has a very cool, comfy feel and they also books and quite a few board games you could use while sipping on your latte.
Sixteen years today! Seems like yesterday ... or maybe sixteen times sixteen ... but in todays world, sixteen years managing a small business can seem like more than a lifetime. Congratulations to the Mistress of the best coffee shop in the city and thanks for all that you do to make your customers lives a little better. I hope that you, Shannon, will be around for at least that many more years ... and I hope to be around to help you turn out the lights when its done ... after my Americano. Sixteen years! Well done.
Fantastic coffee, delicious pastries and sandwiches combined with the most energetic and gracious staff, I cant think of a better way to start your day.Atmosphere is very laid back with out door seating available.Dont forget to check out the unique local artists work that is on display. All for sale. Dont miss out on a future Rembrandt.
Great coffee shop! The coffee was delicious. I had the mint mocha. I also had the Euro grilled cheese. The atmosphere is chill. Laid back, comfortable and cozy. The chairs are so comfortable to sit in. They also have an outdoor area in the back with cute fairy gardenesque landscaping. There is sidewalk chalk and a few toys making it inviting for kids as well. I highly recommend this place!
The Chapterhouse Cafe was even more wonderful than its Google Maps description. I discovered it in August, 2020, but was unable to visit it during that Philadelphia Vacation. But for my #PhiladelphiaVacation2021 I knew that I would visit. It was my first time drinking Golden Milk, and it was made marvelously well. Also, the Blueberry coffee cake is a classic example of #Foodgasmic goodness. There are other foods and beverages that shall keep me exploring the menu for a very long time. Also, the staff was exemplary in provinding service with a smile and I found the bathroom especially clean and well-stocked.I look forward to returning, as soon as I can.
My favorite place to get work done in the city. Generally quiet and not cramped up in small space; always many seating options (the whole basement is seating too!) The wifi is sometimes a bit slow if there are a lot of people working on laptops, but never enough of an issue to leave. The iced tea sodas are INCREDIBLE, the Vanilla Breakfast tastes like the root beer of tea, but better. Overall, nice environment, good food and beverage selection, and perfect place to get work completed.
Not the very best coffee house in the city, but one of my favorites! Certainly worthy of 5 stars. Also one of the most friendly coffee shops in the city. Over the years, as in any small business, there has been turn over, but every time, the staff is always excellent. Ive had nice conversations with other coffee drinkers here as well. So, despite living in West Philly, when Im in their neighborhood, I try to make a stop.I will make one small criticism: they used to get the most amazing (!) apricot scones. Unfortunately, I havent seen these for a while. :-(
Really good lattes and smoothies. Also great that you can sit inside here during COVID ( lots of space/masks are worn) if you need to meet with someone/ get a bit of work done. However, I took a star away since the WiFi needs improvement. VERY annoying to have the connection drop every 15 minutes when you are trying to get work done . Probably going to end up using your hotspot , which kind of makes free WiFi pointless, you know?
Amazing! I have been coming here for years. The reasons are simple. I get a lot of work done here. The people working here are very nice and creative. Some of the best conversations happen here with friends and strangers. Finally, the place is cozy and homey. It just feels nice inside.
This was a neat Cafe I found in order to take some time to do some work. I live in the northern liberties area but I often like to venture and try new places around the city. This was a great Cafe shop with cool selections. The atmosphere was not too loud as other people were working as well. I will definitely be back soon. I would recommend a lot!
Inviting neighborhood cafe with good coffee.Chapterhouse has a full variety of coffees and fresh teas; I enjoyed their selection of flavored lattes served hot/cold w dairy/oat/soy milk. My iced Nutella latte was 4.50 plus tax. Also carry assortment of cookies and pastries including options from crust vegan. Server was very kind and accommodating despite my indecisiveness. There were plenty of chairs as well as 2-person tables, and the 3 rooms allow plenty of space (also a downstairs). Noise level very low/mild. Appears LGBT friendly and welcoming.
Only been once, but will be back. Only tried a tea (because was giving up caffeine at the time) but they had a decent selection of teas (including a couple of decaf choices). Also got a biscotti and it looked like they had a tasty assortment of pastries. Was very quiet on the weekday morning we visited, so looking forward to going back and getting some work done (WIFI looked good).
This place does lattes. Delicious lattes. Their selection is lovely. I also like how they have so much seating. (Upstairs and downstairs) its a cute little place with a cozy quiet atmosphere. I can not wait to go back and get some more studying in!In the photo is a berry latte(hot) and a black and tan iced.
Chapterhouse is my #1 go-to for coffee in the Bella Vista area! The ambiance is so relaxing and homey, the staff is friendly, there is free WiFi and plenty of seating available! Ive tried a few of their teas, coffee, and their bagels (and other assorted baked goods) and Ive been pleased every time. They also have a small living room style area complete with a sofa, coffee table and a stack of board games! It’s a wonderful place to hang out whether you are alone or with friends.
From the moment I walked into the shop it was a warm welcome with the smell of fresh coffee. The server at the counter was very helpful and took extra time to ensure I got what I wanted. I was told about the place by a friend and it was a good suggestion. I will stop back in again next visit to the area. Great coffee and service.
It became my favorite place to study for the bar, its relatively quiet and the music they play is mellow enough that its not distracting or overbearing. The drinks are perfectly made, I like the Mexican Mocha the most, the staff is hella nice, and the food is tasty. I highly recommend you try the Euro Grilled Cheese.
After much undeserved recognition, this Cafe prooved to be anything but glorious. The small space, which encapsulated a dismal seating area, broken floors, a dirty bathroom, and a collection of less than attractive artwork, was staunch and unwelcoming. The ill mannered, incompetent employee at the counter did not offer any form of acknowledgment to any customer that entered the cafe. He and his coworker were more interested in their own conversations than talking with the customers. The only menu in the establishment was a sheet of laminated paper placed on the counter at the register, inaccessible to anyone other than the person at the register. They have a ten dollar minimum for credit card purchases, so unless you are carrying enough cash, you have to spend more than ten dollars. When ordering, the employee could not answer a simple question about the menu, complaining that it was too broad of a question for us to ask. Being the only customer in line, I was aghast to hear two drinks would take longer than five minutes to make. To top off my visit, after I had requested soy milk in my latte due to my lactose intolerance, the now bitter employee chose to give me regular milk without my knowledge. The only hint of friendliness I experienced was as I was on my out of the cafe with the drink I believed to me made with soy. Ultimately, this cafe is not worth the visit.
Awesome. The Thai coffee is so good, and the chocolate biscotti is a wonderful pairing. Also, the regular drip coffee is delicious and full-tasting---not sour hipster stuff. Really cool environment, lots of seating, reliable wifi, great music selection (mix of jazz, indie, folk, punk, rock, tech, etc), friendly baristas, reasonable prices. One of the only good coffee spots open til 10. Great place all around for visitors or locals.
Something has changed! I used to come here years ago and loved it. The staff was so welcoming, chatty, and friendly. The guy here today clearly hates his job. Never smiled and only looked up to tell me he didn’t feel comfortable excepting my $50 bill, even though he had the marker to test its authenticity. To put it mildly, he was rude.
This is my favorite independent café downtown. The coffee is rich and nutty, lacking the acidic, fruity tones that sadly seem popular with the hipper coffee shops nowadays. The baristas are not the most outgoing, but seem to warm up when engaged - although I keep my eyes open for the infamous redhead. Finally, I love the space, which is subtle but still visually appealing, with extensive tables & comfy chairs. I assume the people who describe it as cramped prefer open spaces. Myself, I love the almost warren-like layout: theres always a spot, yet it still feels private, intimate, almost.
So I was just served by the barista with curly hair and glasses who got a less than favorable review two weeks ago, and she was very friendly to me and also surprisingly patient with the crazy customer in front of me who continued to alter his order after he had paid for it. I think this is a great coffeeshop and I find the staff to be nothing but sincere. Believe it or not, getting paid minimum wage to work a fast paced and demanding job can be stressful, but these people know how to serve coffee with a smile that isnt fake. Thanks for providing a great place to work, hang out, relax, fuel up, or just stop by, Chapterhouse.
Could use more seating and a larger food selection. Too expensive and the pastries are left out too long. Staff is mostly pleasant and non-intrusive. One bathroom for everyone on the street level is not sufficient. An additional bathroom is needed on the basement level.
Came here to study with a friend. There are many tables and the ones at the storefront have a nice view of the tree-lined street. I ordered a Cuban coffee and it was delicious, though extremely sweet. I also had a peach Danish, which seemed to be almost identical to those served at Capogiro. They dont seem to mind pets as a couple of dogs out on walks came in to grab coffee. WiFi here is a bit shaky, but for book work Chapterhouse has an extremely inviting atmosphere for studying.
I love chapterhouse. I moved to north philly and I still take a bus to visit regularly. Its an ambient, peaceful space for studying, unwinding, or getting some reading done. The music choices and the art on display are always interesting. The specialty drinks and the pastries are all excellent, but a little on the pricey side. I always make sure I eat before I leave, and just buy a little something to snack on.
This place has tons of seating (including a basement if you go all the way to the back) and they allow dogs, but the coffee is just OK and I wouldnt call it a friendly or welcoming place. Still its probably your best bet if you want to camp out and do some work in a coffee shop.
Ive been coming here for years and I always get great coffee made by great people. If youve never been here before, you should definitely go. If you have already been here then you already know how good it is, and you should probably just go back already instead of reading the rest of this...
Ive had mostly good experiences at Chapter House in the past, but theres a particular barista working there who is hostile and abusive to customers. Shes slightly heavy set, has red curly hair, and wears glasses. She asks you what you want, then makes you repeat your answer, and then she expresses her contempt for you either to her friends or directly at you. She does not in any way shape or form want to serve you if she decides not to, whatever her whimsical criteria for her decision may be. I spoke with the owner today about the incident, and her response was a mixture of sympathy, indifference, and defensiveness. Thoughtfulness didnt seem to be one of her strong points, so Im not sure if her sympathy was entirely sincere. She acknowledged the incident, while excusing her baristas behavior, which by all appearances made sense to me. My feeling is that the owner is compromising her own standards for the sake of charity, and places the customer last in her line of priorities. If you dont like being singled out and treated like youre not welcome to your coffee, dont go to Chapter House.
Lots of table space, fast and reliable wi-fi, and lots of power plugs - what more can you ask for in a coffee house? The worker was a little short and told me Id have to wait after ordering a sandwich (only reason why I didnt give a 5), but the sandwich itself was delicious!
Though Ive lived in Philadelphia for several years, I just found this place recently. I was walking around the neighborhood and passed what on first glance appeard to be a rowhouse with large windows. On closer inspection I located the sign advertising it as a Chapterhouse Cafe. I really like this feature. Makes me feel like I found something not everyone does. Ambiance is pleasant, layout is open and light - really like the large bank of windows in the front. Coffee and tea are pretty good. Will definitely return when I can.
This is what its all about. This is the cheers of coffee houses in Philly-- but geared towards people that want to be out-and about while doing work.Great employees, great energy with all the smart people all around. So many like me call this their second home. You can find me here working on a laptop for a couple hours, four days a week.
This place was my favorite cafe in Philadelphia for 3 years, until today - June 6th, 2014. The barista, her name is Michelle, she has red-curly hair and I believe that she is referenced in other comments in a not so positive light. Anyway, today I was inspecting various shops, books stores, etc in Philadelphia to find a spot for my next book signing (I am an author). I popped into Chapter House for about 35 minutes to send an email, considered the possibility of doing a book signing here and waiting for my girlfriend. Upon leaving the cafe, the cashier, Michelle, yells from the counter and across the room, You didnt buy anything… this isnt a study hall where you just come and dont buy anything. I was appalled and turned around, as I couldnt believe I was being badgered from across the cafe by a barista. I explained to the barista that I always buy something when I come to this cafe and that I just didnt today, as I was in a hurry. She continued to badger me in an attempt to humiliate me in front of the entire cafe. She said everyone else in here has bought something. This is even more alarming as I beg to know how/why she focused her attention on ME. Her presumptions of me, as a kid at a study hall may have been most appalling as I am a doctor, far from a child using the cafe as a study hall. Shouldnt matter if I were. I called once I left to ask her for her managers name and she refused to give me the managers name! Unbelievable. I will be sending a letter in the mail, as well as trying to get in contact with the owner/ manager again today or tomorrow. This is not the way to treat a patron, it was unprofessional and disgusting to say the least. To boot, my colleague was at the cafe witnessing this entire incident. To think of all the money I have spent here over the years, to be treated in such a fashion.

2022-05-07First time customer, and all I can say is that I need to go back for more!! My friend introduced me to Chapterhouse and their diverse menu is so refreshing to skim through. We sat and chatted and played their Sorry board game, since we didn’t want to pull the books and laptops out to study. You could be in there for hours without noticing, that’s how great the environment was. I got an iced oatmilk dirty chai with vanilla, and my friend got a Mexican hot chocolate. Great taste.11/10 would recommend going here at least once.

2021-07-13Relaxed neighborhood hangout that Id recommend for custom milkshakes (banana is the delicious added ingredient), fresh-baked treats and locally-sourced Franklin Ice Cream (vanilla honeycomb is the best!). They now offer sandwiches and are open until about 8pm. The cafe features local artists works ( love the sloth print I purchased). Note that their full menu is not online, just posted in their window. Also, you have to hunt to see their signage--I walked by for ages before knowing what it was called.

2022-06-29A huge, spacious coffeeshop with plenty of room to work, study or hangout. Its a really friendly neighborhood spot with plenty of regulars and great vibes. Best place to get work done and also have a delicious sandwich and a fun nontraditional drink- like a handmade Italian soda, a soda-tea twist, or a milkshake.

2022-05-24I didnt have a great experience here. When I arrived, the space was sparse aside from the two baristas and 1 other patron. They proceeded to take me and my partners order. They made his coffee but not mine. I waited for about 20 minutes, standing at the counter (trying to make relaxed but appropriate eye contact) and no one helped me. It was very odd to say the least. When I finally got my coffee it was luke warm and quite generic, which was unexpected based on the creative specialty coffee names and titles, very sad. I love coffee, but will not visit again.

2022-05-12I arrived more than an hour before closing. I generally only go to coffee shops to sit and drink my coffee there so that I dont have to waste disposable plastic and paper. Its a small way of taking care of mother nature;) Yet even though I was dining in they still gave me a paper cup, a paper bag, and a plastic top. I told them I was dining in but they insisted. When I asked further they said that starting at 6:30 p.m., an hour and a half before closing, they routinely switch to disposable so they dont have a lot of dishes to do at night! So of course my thought is: theyre willing to litter the landfill even further to see they dont have to wash out a few coffee cups at night? What a waste! In more ways than one.

2020-10-22Amazing coffeeI got the sweet tooth which was amazing and my friend got the hot chocolate. We also got some pastries. The girl at the register was not nice but the coffee was worth the bad attitude, also I think this place should have two baristas by she’s probably over worked

2019-05-01This place is awesome. They have a Nutella latte! Plus, they have lots of vegan options (coffees, a wrap, scones) and the staff is super friendly. We only got a latte but the pasties looked good. There are also artwork around the place that is pretty cool.
