The sculpture at the intersection of McCallum Street and Wolcott Drive, on the property of Cherokee Apartments, is a disturbing distraction that threatens both the immediate safety of passers-by, both on foot and in vehicles, as well as the longer-term mental health and well being of those who see it. The sculpture is positioned in such a way as to be impossible to not see when approaching the spot on foot from any direction. It is also impossible not to see while driving south on Wolcott Drive or when turning at the end of McCallum Street in either direction, and nearly impossible if not impossible to not see while heading north on Wolcott Drive originating south of McCallum Street. The sculpture is by Peter Lundberg. In various interviews and statement Lundberg has said he seeks to explore dark and disturbing themes and ideas in his art, his pieces reflect this. His use of the media concrete and steel invariably results in something utterly bleak and desolate in appearance. By the standard he sets for himself, he succeeds. Other renown and esteemed sculptors from around the world hail his work and praise its ugliness and crudeness.Reactions to Lundbergs pieces from more casual viewers of art, as seen in a sample of news articles from various locations, have not been so receptive. They have in fact mostly been negative. Since art in public places is by definition meant to appeal to the general public, not just art world insiders, placement of self-proclaimed, self-evident doom & gloom art in highly visible public locations needs to be carefully weighed. Its perfectly valid for art to delve into the negative aspects of life. However, when art of that nature is displayed prominently to the masses, it can actually have a detrimental affect on the society as a whole, and to the overall quality of life.
This place is a beautiful, wonderful, community. Filled with lovey scenery in all seasons, friendly residents, wonderful office staff, and very hard working maintenance team. They do solid work all year long. This place is near to Germantown Ave where all the stores and shops are, there is the famous Wissahickon Creek and Valley Green minutes away from the property. There is a reason many people have lived here for years and loved it.
DO NOT RENT HERE IT IS A FINANCIAL TRAP. Absolutely horrible everything in terms of management to company greed is I tolerable. 7 months after I left the apartment spotless, they are sending collections AFTER I PAID WHAT WAS AGREED UPON IN WRITING demanding more. The company managing it is a group of thieves.
The NY- owned company is bad. Complex used to be good before new owners took over. Management is extremely deceptive and greedy. No way to tell what gas bill will be from month to month, costs more than a house. They refuse to replace dead shrubbery. Dont waste your time or money. No amenities.
Don’t waste your money! Was gonna rent from this place until I talked to other previous and current tenants. Don’t let the pictures they advertise deceive you! Way overpriced, horrible management, they raise the rent every year and yet refuse to fix up the apartments for the current tenants, and from what I understand, you pay for utilities even if your not using them! (Is that even legal?!) No thanks! So many better options around to spend your hard earned money!
Outside of the building is very outdated. The apartments are not bad, but are in need of serious renovations!! Staff is average, but if you’re looking for a low end appointment, this place is for you. However, if you want something more clean and modern, look elsewhere!!
The ambiance is great here. Cant beat the proximity to the wiss. Management is a but odd and be careful as they will try to nickel and dime you on your way out. They really want that security depo. The maintenance guys are great and fast with claims. Just cover yourself with your move out.

2021-07-14I just stopped in to inquire about a 2 Br 1 bath apartment and was met at the office door by a very unfriendly person who told me there were no openings. I asked if there might be in the coming months and she said she didn’t know. I asked what was included in the rental price and she closed the door then came back with a paper and read some prices off to me. I asked what the estimated electricity cost might be for the 995 square foot 2 BR 1 bath, and she said it depends on the person. I asked for a general estimate and she said she had no idea. I asked if I might make an appointment to see and apartment and she said there were no openings and none to look at. She seemed to have absolutely no knowledge of the facility or interest in customer service or leasing. I was a bit shocked by her unprofessional behavior. I took a walk around the property and saw that it looked run down. The lawn needed to be mowed, gutters appeared to be filled with debris, the air conditioner window units seemed to be quite old, and some of the windows were ill fitting and water stained around the outside edges which gave me concern that they may be extremely energy inefficient as well as leaky. This is a lovely neighborhood with convenient access to many businesses and universities. It may have been a nice apartment complex for many years after it was renovated 20-30 years ago. Unfortunately, I think there may now be significant management problems. The prices seem high when considering the age and condition of the structures and grounds. I would be concerned that the ownership or management agency may be experiencing financial distress. I would be cautious about wasting time and money on an application fee, or signing any lease agreement. This is a property with all the symptoms of serious decay/decline.

2021-05-24Potential renters: I want to save you money. For me and my partner to apply (all adults over 18 must apply), it cost $150. This is the highest application fee I have seen in my 11 years living in Philadelphia. All adults that apply have to be approved, and considering neither of us together or separate have ever been denied from an apartment, we were dismayed when we were emailed a pdf titled “adverse action_no reason”. My partner was denied and we still can’t figure out why. Neither of us have any prior evictions, bad credit, or poor income (together, we make 6 times the monthly rent). It seems like this was for no reason, as their document would imply.Just out of curiosity, my partner asked about a co-signer since we were beginning to feel like this place is purposefully prohibiting working-class people. To have a co-signer, they need to make 7.5 times the monthly rent. I’m not sure if this is the industry norm, but it sounded fishy to me.Overall, we dodged a bullet. We wanted to live here to stay in the neighborhood since we’ve loved living in Chestnut Hill. The renovated units are average at best, and the older units were looked visibly dated and dirty, and the cost of rent is steep for what you get. I’m grateful that we didn’t wind up living here, but we can’t believe we lost $150 for, literally, “no reason”.

2020-01-05We are current residents and we love living here. Cherokee Apartments are gorgeous midcentury apartments with incredible architecture history. They are older which does come with natural wear and tear. The staff is quick to respond to issues and have a fabulous attitude. They are always a delight to work with. The apartments are pet friendly. There is a dog park. Also, the location has easy access to shopping and hiking. The grounds are quiet and feel like a sanctuary from the city.

2016-07-13My girlfriend and I moved in around April. We were looking for a quiet, but still lively area outside of the city. Cherokee was only the second complex we looked at and immediately we knew, this was our new home. They are a very pet friendly community, which was HUGE because i have two massive dogs and most places that I know of would turn you away if the dogs were over certain weights. The apartment is great. The kitchen is all newly renovated, with all new appliances, the floor was just redone before we moved in and the way the apartment is set up, its so easy to decorate and make your own.It is an older complex, so there are minor issues that happen, like wear and tear over the years, but the maintenance guys are extremely friendly, funny guys, who are quick to show when you need them. For example, the AC unit in my master bedroom was very old and outdated and made very loud noises if used. I let the front office know about the issue and the maintenance guys knocked at my door the following morning with a brand new unit. They really care and are trustworthy people.I would highly recommend looking into Cherokee apartments on your hunt for home. We found our home here and havent looked back.

2021-04-14Unfortunately we lived underneath the owner of the unit who was the most stone faced, most prejudice guy Ive ever met. Took away from the beauty of the entire neighborhood. The walls were so thin, that you could hear everything we said from our first floor apartment! And guess where he stayed most of the time?...in the basement!!! Creepiest guy ever!!! They are charging us for a payment which was paid already and put us in collections. How can you do this if you gave us our security deposit back? Sheesh!

2018-10-08My husband and I lived here for a year and we loved it. Quiet, nice community and the staff are very friendly. Lots of unique touches: the different trees are labeled, there are lots of interesting sculptures on the grounds, and they just put in a dog park this year. Ample free parking. Easy access to Wissahickon Creek walking trails. Large windows in the apartments provide lots of light, but they lose a lot of heat so the winter gas bill is very expensive.

2020-01-31I moved in and what made my move was the outdoor hiking close by and outdoor sculptures at each building when I toured the property. I also can’t wait for warmer weather to utilize the outdoor area to cook and relax. I am happy with the including of dog park even though I am not a pet owner but is helpful to others. Want to say thank you to the leasing office for making this a wonderful move for me.

2019-11-20I lived there for almost a year, with my two children. Management was terrible, deceitful, rude and incompetent. Although the location is nice, given the proximity of the woods, the apartments are in need of a serious upgrade. Mine was either too hot or too cold. Glass windows were broken, and tape simply placed over the fractures instead of them being fixed. There is a terrible smell of gas right outside my door. When I asked the manager to deal with it, her answer was that I should call the PGW myself. Not a good experience at all. I would not recommend this place.

2016-02-24I know people are quick to complain, but not always quick to say when they are happy, so I wanted to take a minute and leave a positive review for my apartment community. It is a nice, quiet community that feels like its away from the noisy hubbub of the city, but close enough to get to the hustle and bustle easily. It is an older complex, but there have been renovations done to upgrade the inside. For instance, I have a newly renovated kitchen that I love with dark wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances. I love cooking in there and looking out the window onto my serene neighborhood. There are various age ranges of people, from young college students to older retirees. Many people have dogs on the property and they can often be seen strolling around the property with them. Its an older property, so its not perfect. There are sometimes maintenance issues, or unforeseen problems that come with older buildings, but I have always felt like maintenance and the office staff do everything within their power to solve the problems as they happen. They cant tear down the buildings and start from scratch, so they do the best they can with what they are given.A couple of things that really stood out to me when I was apartment hunting: I really liked the variety of options I was given at this property. I liked the range between one bedroom apartments all the way up to a three bedroom townhouse. I felt like I had a lot to choose from. I thought the property manager, Drew, was exceptionally kind and courteous and understood how to ask the right questions to help me sort through the myriad of options they offer and pick something that was right for me. Any time I have gone into the office, Drew and Ayana have both been very warm and welcoming.Im definitely happy with my choice and happy to be part of this community. Like I said, its not perfect. Its not brand new construction. So, you have to be a little forgiving if you are looking for perfection. But if you love nice scenic environments, a warm office staff, and a real community feel, then you should give this place a look!
