The coffee here is amazing. Its full of flavor and you can taste all of the flavor notes they describe in it. I got the cold aeropress since it was warm out and loved it. This coffee is more on the expensive side but totally worth it. When looking for a tasty cup of Joe this is the place to go.
Awesome coffee shop! Probably the best coffee youll find in that part of Philly. There is a very nice shaded park across the street in which to enjoy your coffee. Parking is a bit difficult but if you go up one block you can park at Sherwin-Williams and Advance Auto. A small Cafe with little seating but they do have some outdoor seating in good weather.
They dont have for-here glasses for cold drinks :( and since Philly doesnt really recycle anymore this is a huge bummer, especially because I asked if they have for-here cups and they said yes-- I was ready to give them my reusable cup if that was the case. The flash brew iced coffee was good though.
They have the best Latte in town. The last time I had a latte that good was in Montreal in the 80s! I stop there almost every day. It is addictive. The staff is relaxed, friendly and very coffee knowledgeable. They really know their stuff. Some have interesting stories about their years of travel studying the art of coffee making. Very cool place.
This review is more about the experience than the coffee/food.It was not a nice way to start the day. The staff members were bickering in front of us about a missing Sharpie and the wrong size cups, when I asked a question the response was a flat, smile-free no. It took 15 minutes to get our coffee (they stopped working while they bickered), there was no apology when they got the coffee order wrong, and finally they gave us a croissant that was burnt on top.The only friendly person was the woman who handed me my correct coffee order, she smiled and said Have a nice day.The experience had a negative vibe.🤷🏻♀️
Function Coffee Labs has the friendly coffee craft game on lock. I live in a city that attracts coffee enthusiasts from across the country, and I’d trade all of Portland’s award-winning specialty roasters and retailers for easier access to a café like this.Take 60 seconds to scan the menu overhead and there will be no need to read between the lines: Function Coffee Labs is out to save you from so much as a sip from a subpar cup. This is very, very good coffee. Meticulously sourced, small-batch, artisanal; you could rattle off all the makings of a third wave coffee shop too. But it’s not just the espresso (or the coffee shot, or the cortado, or the cappuccino -- oh my god, the cappuccino) that makes me wish FCL were a fixture on my own walk to work.-Service: Chances are, the owner will be the one behind the bar. Here’s what I liked about Ross: he’s able to read people. If Instagram is your thing, you can count on a latte that looks too good to drink. If you want to talk about the latest signature drink and grams and fluid ounces and what he’s tweaked to dial it in that day, he will happily oblige. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve ordered the same drink for the past decade or if 90% of your counter space is devoted to home brewing gadgets and accessories. There’s nobody more down-to-earth, knowledgeable, or contagiously enthusiastic about temperature, technique, purveyors, and flavors. But if you just want your large iced coffee to go, ideally sooner rather than later (since you’re running a few minutes behind), he’ll hop to it. And in either case, he’s bound to remember your name the next time you come in.-Ambiance: 10/10. Perfect playlists. The happy hum of caffeinated (and soon-to-be caffeinated) people. Just the right amount of miscellaneous background noise. No shortage of green growing things. A variety of tables for slow-sipping, talking, reading, or working. This is the type of place where you can meet someone for a blind date, catch up with a friend, get good work done on your laptop, and/or easily befriend someone sitting a table away.-Aesthetic (and other bonuses): Ross’s fiancé and co-owner, Meg, is behind much of FCL’s aesthetic appeal. The brightly lit, smartly branded shop has a clear color palette, with broad navy strokes and splashes of white. Copper elements abound, as do pretty pops of turquoise. A chalkboard sign out front speaks to Ross and Meg’s combined intelligence and wit; the creative commentary is often as social media worthy as any pourover action shot. The real draw, however, may be the bakery case, which is loaded with the homey and locally sourced, each more irresistible than the next. If none of the day’s sweet treats sway you, snack options range from Stroopwafels and bean-to-bar chocolates to RX bars and overnight oats. If youre lucky enough to get your hands on one of the half dozen breakfast sandwiches the café puts out each morning, don’t tell me. You’ll break my heart. All this to say, if you’re lucky enough to have Function Coffee Labs at your fingertips: Go hungry. Go thirsty. And go now, before the place shoots to the top of the standing-room-only list. This is specialty coffee done right.
This place is adorable, and the stuff is very nice. Unfortunately, we only got to experience it under the circumstances of COVID, so we were relegated to a pickup order, but the inside of the building is very cute and cozy, the coffee is high quality, and the pastries we got to sit outside at the small cafe tables was delicious. Looking forward to visiting again, when Im able to sit inside and enjoy the delicious coffee and baked good aroma, and maybe pick up some of the cute coffee shop gear they have displayed.Great job with meeting things safe with the pickup setup, by the way! Ill be back.
Fante’s, the kitchen shop on 9th, makes these amazing frozen cappuccinos from May to October, $3 for a 12-oz cup. Being a little shy of this range but craving a frozen coffee drink, we followed the signs for frozen cortados into Function. Attached is a photo of what we received for $5.50. I would like to note that I am 5’2” with a small hand. It was three scoops of a small spoon. $5.50. Around the corner, Villa di Roma was handing out samples of tomato sauce in the same sized cups. Samples! The frozen cortado was bitter and chunky, and paying so much for one fluid ounce of it has put a stink on this otherwise very nice day.
I love viennoiserie so I stopped for a sourdough croissant. It certainly is something that sounds better in paper than it tastes in reality... I didnt think it worked, other than as novelty. The coffee looked good and Ill come back to try it and give it 5 if I like it. But probably no more pastries for me.
Crumby coffee and poor service. From the moment we walked in, the experience was disappointing. Not even a hello from the cashier, and she rolled her eyes when we asked for napkins. What really did it...we were inside for a minute to order and they gave us one drink. Abruptly, they asked us to leave inside to wait for 15 seconds for our second drink outside due to social distancing. This came from the same cashier who was hugging a friend right before asking us to leave. Very hypocritical and not a great experience especially as we try to support local businesses. Add in the coffee tasted worse than regular drip coffee from Wawa. There are much better coffee shops in the city from vibe, experience, and most importantly coffee. Nothing special here, look elsewhere.
I have been to the coffee shop a few times now and I cant even describe how good their coffee is. I love to travel and always look for the best coffee place, and this one is incredible. The owners are super friendly and can go into a lot of details and explanations about their coffee if you ask (they wont bother you if youre not asking though). And the highlight of it all, their CHEESECAKE! My second favourite thing to look for after coffee, and they actually beat the best cheesecake places I have been to, hard to believe but see for yourself!
I ordered a butter croissant and it was old and dry, and it was a sourdough croissant. I eat a lot of butter croissants and I never got a sourdough one before, it definitely shoukd have been labeled as such. Mainly my complaint is that it was stale and should have been thrown out and not sold to me.
I visited the city for only a short time, but I wish it was longer so I could go back to Function! I had a great time there, as did my wife who isnt even a coffee drinker really. She got one of the specialty drinks and loved it, and we also picked up a bag of coffee and the avocado toast - the barista made the whole experience very friendly, comfortable, and easy. I had an espresso, and theirs came with a piece of celery as well as carbonated water to help cleanse the palate. The celery was an extra touch I havent had before. My wife and I enjoyed our food and drinks, and everything about the experience - which we usually arent able to say, so Function is really special!
Adorable coffee shop with wonderful baristas 👍☕ They roast their own coffee which is always a good sign. Their logo & company name are super cool & they have lots of paraphernalia for sale (mugs, shirts, notebooks etc). The menu is creative which I enjoyed. I got a maple butternut squash latte that sounded weird, but looked beautiful & tasted even better. All the baked goods looked delicious. I was full when I went, but I cant wait to visit again & get a cinnamon roll.😍😍😍
My favorite coffee place in Philly. Baristas here are masters. Very tasty! And I love the vibes — it’s good to sit with your laptop, book or just have quite meeting with good friend. I love it. I am in Philly for 2 weeks but definitely it will be my morning place for awesome cup of coffee. Much love, thanks ❤️
Thank you, Function Coffee Labs! Love this beautiful local coffee shop with awesome coffee and food. I usually drink my coffee with a splash of cream but I dont need to add a thing to their coffee because its so smooth and no bitterness. Ross is knowledgeable, friendly and knows what to suggest for each persons taste. The place has a positive vibe to it and even on my most stressful day coming in for a delicious slice of cheesecake or a slice of quiche with cup of coffee turns my entire day around. Yay for Function Coffee Labs!!
The best cortado in Philly. Really nice neighborhood place, they know their regulars and the service and banter keep us coming back. Small but tasty breakfast selection - my kid loves their overnight oats, the breakfast sandwiches are good, and they have Machine Shop pastries :) They know coffee and take it seriously but not in a snobby way - if you have questions ask, they are thrilled to help you learn more.
My wife and I visited while on a Philly trip. Had a lovely chat with the owner and learned a lot of interesting details about coffee making and tasting. Tried and thoroughly enjoyed a couple things he suggested. Wife really enjoyed her cappuccino as well. Shop is cozy and aesthetically pleasing. Would definitely go back next time we are in town.
Found this when searching for coffee shops in the area and LOVED it. I roast my own coffee, so I have pretty high standards. The owner, Ross, really knows his stuff and totally geeks out to give his customers the best possible coffee. Good atmosphere, too. This will be my new go-to coffee shop whenever Im in the area!
I wanted to rate this while still drinking it. Excellent, simple latte. Smooth, flavorful, the perfect temp - this is a perfect cup of coffee.Next time were in town Ill ask more questions and try so etching less basic. But a great latte is our baseline for any coffee house. Best coffee Ive had in years.
Some people genuinely care about their craft. I found that the folks at Function deeply love coffee and want to offer their best to everyone. They also understand that this may involve a reeducation of the common coffee palate. Those who have fallen in love with great coffee will find a home in Philly and those who are new will soon find a passion. Visit and support them, you will be happy you did.
My favorite coffee in Philly. Theres always a great selection of coffees. They know the art of the beans without the pretentiousness that usually comes with it on other places. If you love coffee, wanna learn more or just wanna a fabulous coffee drink, this is the place to go :)
Definitely my favorite café in Philly! Fantastic coffee, tasty pastries, relaxing atmosphere, and most importantly; a lovely staff. Theyre friendly, they take great pride in their work, and they make sure that their coffee is always fresh and flavorful. Right down the road from the Italian Market, I definitely recommend a visit to Function Coffee Labs!
Ross was incredibly nice and explained the menu to us, helping us pick what we might want to drink based on the flavor profiles. The coffee is delicious, service is excellent, and the shop itself is airy and nice. So glad to have a nice little coffee shop in our new neighborhood.
Delightful experience in Philly. Came in from out town and needed a strong coffee experience after the half marathon. Googling the area, found this hidden gem and could not have been more pleased. Would recommend following the owners choice of the day. Had a double espresso that was absolutely on point with some of the best coffee I get in Chicago.
I had the displeasure of going to this coffee shop today. I went in and placed my order and I was then asked to wait outside for my order to be filled. The next customers that went into the store placed their order and were allowed to wait in the store for their order which was filled before my order was. A couple of minutes later the employee brings out my order and I asked why they were not only allowed to wait in the store but why their order was filled before mine. I was given the wrong answer when I was told “their order was smaller”. First of all customers are waited on in the order that they come into the store. Second they ordered two drinks I ordered four. It’s not like I ordered ten drinks that I would understand. When I asked the employee why I was told to wait outside while they were allowed to wait inside the answer I was given was don’t take it personal. I have to ask how do you not take that personal ? I put in an order I’m asked to wait outside of the establishment and the next customers that come in are not only allowed to wait inside but get served before me like I was invisible or my order didn’t matter. I was highly offended by this and twice as offended when I was told don’t take it personal. There’s no other way to take that.
I hate coffee, but I had the most amazing coffee-based drink here, with lavender jam and I dont even know what. Simply incredible. I tasted the unadulterated coffee my friends bought, too, and even though it was still coffee, it was *interesting*, as in, worth learning to like coffee so I can get to know these drinks better interesting. I will definitely be back.
Really great coffee, lovely interior and service. I got an iced mocha (the chocolate was made in house!) And my only suggestion would be to mix in the chocolate with the hot espresso before pouring it over the cold ice / milk because the chocolate was hard and stuck to the bottom / sides of the cup and so was not integrated into the drink well.
THIS PLACE IS THE BEST! I go 15 min out of my way every morning to get their Americano. Ross the owner is SO friendly and the ambience is perfect for working or grabbing coffee with a friend. They have outdoor seating that overlooks a park as well- cant get much better than this place.
If you love coffee, make sure you check out Function Coffee Labs. Ive had a few things off the menu here and all are delicious. The owners really care about the quality of the coffee and your experience. Nice spot, adorable decor, and great atmosphere. I know Ill be back and definitely recommend stopping in!
My best friend and I LOVE traveling for coffee. Everytime we plan a trip we look up coffee shops we would be interested in. Function Coffee Labs was 1/3 that we chose. When we arrived Saturday night (right before closing) Kai (the barista) was extremely hospitable. When we walked in I was nervous because I hate walking in before closing time AND HE MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS JUST WALKING INTO MY HOME. That is the best feeling. To feel welcomed. Well after trying some treats and coffee, which Kai knew so much about, I fell in love. Great coffee. I had such a lovely experience that the morning after we decided to go again and we spent quite some time there. It’s a very cute environment comfortable seating and fast service. I would definitely say function coffee labs is a 100% go if you’re visiting phili or if you’re a local.P.s always be kind. Be welcoming. A business is its customers and it employees and a place like this will always have my loyalty. Happy Wednesday friends!! Go have some coffee.
In a neighborhood that desperately needed high quality coffee, Function Coffee Labs stepped in to fill a void. It wasnt until I had gone a few times that I realized not only did they fill that void, but they had created a unique coffee experience for those desiring high quality coffee and brewing expertise. The owners are incredibly kind, helpful, and always willing to share their knowledge and expertise of coffee. Couldnt be happier with a local coffee shop!
THE best science-driven coffee experience in Philadelphia. Ross and his team push the limits of how coffee is consumed. Look out for their signature latte, the coffee shot, or the Ross-acano. Vibrant Coffee Roasters, their sister company, has super interesting single-origin roasts and blends. If youre anywhere in Philadelphia and consider yourself curious about coffee culture, these guys do it best.
Function Coffee Labs has become one of the coffee shops I go every week. Ross is very selective when it comes to the coffee he serves to customers. The menu offers pretty much everything you can expect from a regular coffee shop; except, there are much more to it! I would recommend a Duo for espresso enthusiasts who only wanna taste flavorful shots, and a Trio for anyone who wants to experience the characteristics of a coffee bean when prepared different ways. Function Coffee Labs also has special drinks and cold pour over coffee available!!
Skip lunch! Come straight to Functional Coffee Labs for cinnamon roll and cappuccino. Its a once a year thing but your eyes are gonna roll back in your head and all your parts are gonna tingle.Approach with extreme caution. Addictive.Batistas are really cool and nice.
I’ve lived in south philly for 4 months now and had yet to find my favorite coffee shop.... until right now. Came in here for a cold beverage to complement the beautiful autumn day, and was surprised by the first menu listing: a butternut squash maple latte. Turns out they PURÉE butternut squash n maple syrup and mix it into their latte. Whole milk or go home. It’s amazing, a beautiful hint of earth sweetness, and excellent both hot and on ice. 10/10 recommend. A bit pricey but well worth it. Also they’re a small spot so if you’re there on the weekend make plans to take your bev and walk or snag an outdoor table if you’re lucky. Ily, function.
A very quaint oasis in the hustle and bustle of the city. They combine a variety of coffee drinks and bakery items with a modern, hip atmosphere that quiets the noise of the city.Overall, I really like this place. We came here on a really cold day, so the warm drinks were helpful to shake off the icicles from our wind-whipped faces. The drinks were great, the food is great, and the service was spectacular.I had the Chai tea latte, and the ratio of milk to tea was perfect; not too milky but not just tea. My friend had a mocha latte and a chocolate croissant. She says the mocha latte had a good balance of sweet and bitter, but the chocolate flavor wasnt all there. The chocolate croissant was tasty, but very flakey. While we were there, a mother brought her child to the cafe in a stroller, and there are only stairs, so it would be difficult for her to get the stroller into the café. The barista stopped what she was doing, ran to the door, and helped bring the stroller inside. I thought that was the cherry on top of this little coffee shop.Check this place out if youre looking for a quick bite, fast service, and great drinks!
The perfect neighborhood coffee shop. When you travel the world you run across some amazing people and places. Function coffee lab is one of those places. When I look for a good coffee shop I look for two things. One, an owner that has a passion for their profession. Ross is the epitome of that. He clearly has a passion for his art. Ross takes special care to ensure each cup is made to the highest quality. And two, a place where you can walk in and feel comfortable. They have the place detailed and designed to allow the customer to enjoy a cup of coffee. I would strongly recommend this coffee lab to anybody in the area
I guarantee this coffee will be better than any coffee youve had before. Ross takes his time to intricately perfect each cup so that the taste is exactly how it should be. He takes the science of coffee brewing to a whole new level. This is a must stop for coffee lovers and espresso afficionatos.
Function Coffee Labs is one of the hidden gems of Philadelphia! Clean, comfortable atmosphere with educated and knowledgable staff. The owners Ross and Meg are incredible people who source coffee from all around the world. You can be sure, Ill be frequenting FCL whenever Im in Philly.
Excellent attention. At our request we were served in ceramic cups instead of paper ones. They have almond, oat and regular milk to cut through the coffee. The taste of the coffee disappointed us more because it is a place that sells coffee. The croissant with chocolate very good. The chocolate is soft and the dough is crispy.

2022-04-30Such a wonderful little coffee shop! The menu has a great selection and the sourdough cinnamon bun had the tastiest frosting. There are a few seats inside and outside. My boyfriend also enjoyed the oat bar. The cinnamon buns are not heated up (but still tasted good cold).

2021-12-30Worth the trip! Ive been wanting to try for a while, but dont live in the area. My cortado and savory danish were definitely worth the trip. Espresso was very smooth with a little bit of sweetness. And the sourdough adds a bit of a twist to the spinach and artichoke Danish. Will definitely be going back for croissants and barista specials (I regret not trying the French Toast latte, but a cortado is my standard to try at coffee shops).

2022-02-27Function Coffee is one of our favorite cafes in the city, so much so that we remembered it from 5 years ago. When we came back it still lived up to expectations.Order: Two Pour Overs, Toasted Coconut Mocha (latte), and Espresso BunAbout: $22Review: When my wife and I knew we were headed back to Philly we immediately started trying to figure out what that coffee shop was that blew us away like 5 years ago. Turns out it was Function, and upon our return they were just as good as we remembered. They are truly coffee experts. They can talk all about their different pour overs and beans, they make all their syrups in house, they pastries are all freshly made by a local baker, and they are constantly experimenting with something new. While the parking isn’t easy (it never is in Philly) it’s still well worth it to come here. Not only is it probably our favorite cafe in Philly, it’s in our list of favorite cafes ever. I’d highly recommend a visit to Function if you have time.Update: I previously said that they didnt have seating due to COVID but this isnt accurate. Im not sure how I missed this, or if I just thought it wasnt at option but the own replied and said that they do currently have seating so Ive updated the review.

2022-02-03This place freaking rocks!! Great drip coffee, but it’s all about the pastries !! This morning I had the beet and goat cheese danish. Great sourdough flavor in the pastry itself and the filling was delish. I’ve also tried the butternut squash danish and the rye chocolate chip cookie. Both were excellent. Also they’re always really nice in there!I am a substitute teacher and work at a lot of schools around Philly, and sometimes I’ll take jobs in the area just so I can go to function on my break!!!

2021-07-06Ive sampled their lattes, house blend drip coffe, cinammon buns and banana nut muffins so far. All were delicious! The service is friendly and helpful. I visited with a coworker from Spain, and she was impressed with the artistry of their cortado coffee preparation. Theres some outdoor seating around Function and theres Bardascino Park seating if its busy.Come after 8:15 if you want a pastry--thats when the delivery comes from their other location. Highly recommend a visit if you are a gourmet coffee and pastry enthusiast.

2021-11-11A lovely little space, with friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. My pour over is excellent (I love the science-y presentation) and my squash/goat cheese danish (eaten too joyfully to be pictured) was superb—savory, warm and flavorful.

2021-12-06I go here every day. Espresso is done correctly. You can get pour-overs and they have specialty drinks. The most important thing, however, is that they know how to steam milk properly. Every other place in Philly makes wet cappuccinos and calls them lattes. If you are a coffee nerd this is a must go.

2022-04-26Great neighborhood coffee shop. Excellent coffees, teas and snacks. Love the vibe. If there is no room to eat, walk across to the park and enjoy the bocce court game!

2021-06-29Don’t eat here. Especially if you want a legit, West coast sourdough cheese danish. Or a refreshing vanilla latte that isn’t over sweetened like a cup of sugar with milk. Thanks function!

2022-06-29EXCEPTIONAL specialty lattes and sourdough pastries. Is it worth dropping nearly $20 for one of each? Only if youre trying to treat yourself or its your birthday.
