AVOID THIS PLACE! ITS COMPLETE GARBAGE! Ordered Chicken and Broccoli with garlic sauce for take out and it didnt have any garlic sauce whatsoever. Frozen food from the supermarket is more flavorful. Worst of all, is when I called to inform them of their trash food, the man who picked up the phone (most likely the owner of the restaurant) was arguing with me of how this is the most popular way to cook the entree and that I should have informed them of my preferences of heavy or light sauce. Not to mention, the lady who took my order DID NOT inform me of any preference options so I assumed it would be the classic chicken and broccoli with garlic sauce that any competent asian take-out serves. The cherry on on top was he refused to give me a refund back and told me to come back to the restaurant at 1:30AM and that he would make it the way I wanted. I do not live close to this restaurant and any other restaurant with some decency would apologize and offer a refund/store credit to compensate for their mistake. Never coming back again and I suggest going to ANY decent other restaurant in chinatown for a fraction of the price.
Great! We were walking around looking for a place to eat on Saturday night, we went to 3 places that were too busy to seat us...they didn’t look so good anyway...we saw this place and went in. It is clean and welcoming! We were greeted with hot tea and a warm smile! And wow the food is great! Don’t bother with the other spots around here, this is the place to go!
Our usual spot was closed and my family ended up finding this restaurant by chance. The elder couple that attended us was so kind and attentive, even when the restaurant ended up filling up after we got there. The food was delicious, hot and fresh. Calamari with black pepper was just right. Its a good sign when you get offered hot tea right away when youre coming in from the cold and the tea was wonderful.
I havent been here in years but nothing much was still open when we got to Chinatown on Tuesday night. The place was bright and clean as well as nicely decorated. We ordered the Hot and Sour soup. The wife was not excited as the recepie was different than what we usually get but I thought it was very good. It was loaded with tofu and other goodies and had good flavor, but Im a spicy freak and needed to add some chili oil, which did the trick. The steamed dumplings were perfect. Loaded with a pork stuffing in a delicate wrapper, served with the garlic and ginger dipping sauce similar to most of the other restaurants in the area. Chicken with baby corn broccoli and sweet red pepper in spicy brown sauce was enjoyable as was the Ma Po Tofu that was flavored with black beans and finely cut silken tofu. All in all, a very good meal.
Very disappointed experience. I was there at lunch time yesterday and ordered their chef special 客家小炒。 The pork is very dry and not fresh, the celery tastes like the wood, it must be in very last stage before going to trash can. And it is very hard for me to think the dish is made by a chef or even a cook, given its 色,香,味。 The Chinese take-out in my neighborhood could make a better one and charge half the price. Generally speaking the Taiwanese restaurants are making decent dishes, thats why I chose this one yesterday thinking I couldnt be too wrong. Well I was.
Open until 2 AM weekdays & 4 on weekends. The hot & sour soup, fried rice & egg rolls were all very good. Our entrees were not quite up to par. While the chicken was tender , the garlic sauce was very bitter. The roast pork was a bit on the fatty side also. Service was very good, Im thinking that Ill give them one more shot.
Probably my favorite restaurant in Chinatown. Ho Sai Gai is open super late, so its always my first choice for dinner after a long day in the city, or when Im in need of a midnight snack. Beyond that, the food is DELICIOUS. Havent had a bad meal EVER and the wait staff is the most wonderful and friendly and fast Ive ever seen. So good its heartwarming. Im a return customer forever.
This is my go-to restaurant in Chinatown for most occasions, and believe it or not, its not even because of the food. The food IS really good, but the OWNERS of the place are amazing. They are always so welcoming and funny and even remembered my order after only my first visit, even joking around with me about trying new things. Whenever I have a group of friends that are hungry, this is the place to go because its affordable, tasty, and the owners make sure everyone is satisfied and has a good time. Bonus fact: I ordered food one night and had nothing to do so I went early to pick it up, and just sat with the owners watching Americas Got Talent with them until my food was ready. Really great people.
Do NOT go here. First, the soup was like jello thick and disgusting. We never got any sauces. The waitress kept walking away from us before we were finished ordering. We never got water refills. We ordered saiki and they brought it after we asked for the check. I had 2 kids with me and i asked for 2 extra plates and napkins, never got them.Terrible service.Terrible food.First time I was EVER disappointed in Chinatown.
So my first encounter with this place was late night after a festival. My friend and I were walking up and down the streets of Chinatown, desperately trying to find a place that was still open and serving food, when we turn the corner and saw this restaurant. There wasnt a soul inside when we walked in. It was such a peaceful and lovely first experience. But the wonderful food and kind staff is actually what kept us coming back. Weve been there two or three more times since and plan on going back whenever were in the area.
I have been a customer for 10 years. They have the best tasting food in philadelphia.they have a level quality and sanity that will impress you.It is the pearl of china town.Where you and your family are served greatly, and where you get the most for your money. With a grand mastery of Authentic and original courses,All busting with the best tasting and exciting flavors that keeps you coming back.
Ho Sai Gai is definitely one of my top favorite restaurants in Chinatown. Never had to wait long to be seated whether alone or with a group, service is prompt and friendly, and the food is incredible! My first time there was some years ago with a friend who ordered strawberry chicken and was kind enough to let me taste a little of it; after that I told myself that’s what I would order on my next visit, but that has yet to happen; though I’m sure it will eventually. On a recent visit for a friend’s birthday, I ordered the mango beef combo platter (all the combos come with soup, an egg roll, and fried rice, though upon my request, they gladly substituted the fried rice with white rice) and was very satisfied. Looking forward to my next visit!
Been eating here a long time! But its safe to say the Cuisine isnt as good as it use to be. The entrees are more expensive & if you ARENT careful during take out they will sell you an expired bottle of soda.(a friend of mine was sold an expired 7/22/19 diet coke; during 1/2020🙄🙄. More stores are coming about and the cuisines are great. Nonetheless this is always my go to spot when all else is exhausted.
We had won ton soup for two which was amazing, a pork egg roll and beef on a stick all for 27.00. The people were so nice, and the tea was strong, black, and delish. They also serve beer and wine, and it looked like the regular dishes were pretty sizeable if you are super hungry. So good and open until 4 am!
Ordered over $50 in food today and was so disappointed in everything. All the food was cooked so dark and taste burnt. The fried wonton had grease drip out when you take a bite. They were also soggy. PLEASE do not eat the egg roll. One bite and had to spit it out. It smells like it has rotted meat and the vegetables were so old. Hope I dont get food poisoning. The wonton soup broth was good but the wonton itself was disgusting. The noodle was so gooey, gross. I have never had food like this before from China town. Not sure what is going on but please inspect your food before you leave with it. I will never eat from China Town again. Not one restaurant. Disgusting.
The owner of the restaurant is a big fraud! We like the food but he overcharged is $25 more two times. He writes it in chineese and just presents us the bill. First time we thought it happened by mistake when we came home and calculated the prices. My husband didn’t want to make a scene so we just left!! I don’t mind the food but I will not encourage rouges and cheaters. He talks to you while eating pretending to be nice and you realize that you have been scammed later. Asshole
This is my favorite authentic Chinese restaurant anywhere! Tucked away on Race Street where Chinatown is home in fabulous Philadelphia PA. This establishment offers the best among all types of eateries! Going there is more of an experience with Chinese art work, red, gold and black colors tastefully adorning the walls. A statue of Buddah greets you at the door. Thereafter the warmth of the greeters and servers offers an inviting and friendly atmosphere. The menu is extensive so your only problem is what to order for the right bite youre looking for!The costs are not bad considering all this customer received. I live in Florida so my trips to Southern New Jersey are few and far between. When I do fly up there I have two places I must go and this restaurant tops the list competing only with the Jersey shore. If you like duck you must order the duck with orange sauce. The portion size is large but more importantly absolutely delicious! Thank you all at Ho Sai Gai! I cant wait to come back! ❤️
Ive been eating at Ho Sai Gai for over 20 years when it was first located at 131 North 10th Street. Thats where I first met Andy and later Chin. These gentlemen were and are always attentive, pleasant, respectful and the food has always been fresh, flavorful and delicious. The new location is okay but (in my opinion) lacks the ambiance of the former but time marches on and things change. Now at the new location I dont see Andy too much anymore because his health is failing. I heard from Chin hes doing okay though. Great place for a solo night out, a date night or family outing for quality Chinese food. This damn Covid-19 has screwed (I want to use another word) everything up. SMH
Tonight, I was on a date with my male friend, which he had a taste for some Chinese food. I had a good experience in the establishment when I went with my daughter one time in the summertime. However, tonight we had a male server that took our order. My male friend ordered shrimp & chicken in lobster sauce. However my friend took one bite, which he did not like the food, which he stated that it taste like egg sauce. I asked the server if he can get something else because he did not like his food! The server was bluntly rude, which the server said, Im not changing the food because youre not going to like it and you have to pay for it! I had my food in front of me, which I did not touch my combination platter. I ate few bites of my Wonton soup. My friend was offended of the server attitude! The server just charged me for the wonton soup! The point to this review is that the server was not accommodating at all and his refusal of the fact that my male friend did not like the food was unacceptable! I will never visit this establishment again due to the server lack of customer service! In the past I worked in restaurants and retail and I know that you have to treat your customers with kindness and listen if the customer have any issues whatsoever! If you as a customer visit this establishment and you dont like the food; dont be surprised that this male server would have an attitude and refuse your service!
I have been a loyal customer since they were in Port Richmond. Beautiful restaurant, great service, delicious food. Young (owner) is awesome and now that they are in chinatown the restaurant is gorgeous. Dont let all the tourist traps fool you. Chinatowns finest us Ho Sai Gai!
Went to this restaurant with my friends and it was absolutely the weirdest thing I’ve experienced. they kept watching and circling our table, watching us while we ate!! and leaving us feeling extremely uncomfortable. I also saw our waitress literally grab these crackers WITH HER HANDS and put them in this goblet. never coming back here again
My boyfriend took me here almost two years ago and it’s great. Since then we have gone a bunch of times now, and it’s always a good time. Mr. Chin is the best!!! Me and Casey love coming down, thank you for always taking care of us! Try this place out you won’t be disappointed!
When: Memorial Day 2020 (OPEN DURING COVID-19)What: Beef Lo Mein and Dinner Combo (General Tso’s with Pork Fried Rice, Hot sour soup and egg roll)Cost: $26.35How: Credit Card or Cash. Picked up.Fried rice is fragrant and well seasoned with bean sprouts, egg and soy sauce.General Tso chicken is crispy, sweet and savory.Lo mein noodles are chewy, not overcooked or soggy. As a Chinese American craving Chinese American food...I highly recommend.
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Philly.....Now Im upset of the service. I personally think it caters to a certain type of ppl. My lady and i went one night before and was very pleased of the hospitality and food but now Im disgraced of this experience my lady said she wont be coming back because of the lack of concern with the patronage. I personally agree.
Wait staff is really attentive. Had an unmemorable squid with XO sauce, which could have been better seasoned. Have eaten here before and enjoyed my dish--a vegatable menu item. One other review recommended sticking with more traditional dishes. I agree. Prices are average for China Town.
I was waiting to be seated for almost an hour with a friend. There was a party of three that arrived about three minutes after we did & they were seated before us. Interesting.Waitress (a short, older Asian woman with caked-on makeup, cat-eye glasses & possessed an ornery disposition) had us sit at a long table & separated one (rather small) table for us. I asked her if she had a bigger table for us (as well as comfortable), & she replied rather sharply, Thats all we have. Either take it or wait. We left AS SOON as she said that. Will not be coming here anymore going forward. Save your hard-earned money & go eat at a place where the employees actually exude customer service.
Ive come out of Chinese food places more satisfied than I did coming out of this restaurant.I was really craving some spicy food, and while a lot of dishes are toned down for the American pallet, neither I nor my date could taste the spice. That was a letdown.Usually when I get orange, soy, or duck sauce it is fairly light, but the consistency of the sauce that came with my dish was notably thicker, and there was a lot of it.I dont live downtown, so maybe things are prepared differently closer to the suburbs, but I dunno... Like I said, Ive been more satisfied than I was. Both of us felt that way.
Very nice restaurant in Chinatown with owners that take their food seriously. While the traditional Chinese Restaurant fare is of course on the menu, there are also some more unique flavors that Cathy has picked up on her travels. Service has been great every time Ive been there and the food quality is definitely more consistent than some of the great one time, horrible the next restaurants that plague Phillys Chinatown. Id recommend a visit!
This place is probably above the average, but nothing to write home about. We had the three cup chicken, which could have been more flavorful. The fourth star is for the older gentleman who took our orders and seemed to really enjoy his job, making jokes and always smiling.
The Worst! Me and my brother went to China Town 3/3/2020 Trying to find a Chinese Restaurant. We ended up choosing HO SAI GAI Restaurant. Bad Mistake! I order four items: Shagghai Spring Roll 3.50, Shrimp Fried Rice 8.00, Egg Foo/Shrimp 12.00, Young-Sheng Chow Mein 16.95. Total 41.25 With me and my brother calulating it. Plus I round it out. Kathy the lady that took the order told me 55. Something. I told something is wrong you are over charging me. Kathy, oh no you have 4 items, I said that is correct but its doesnt add upMy brother pay it with his card, we got home. I never received my Spring roll and she gave me ribs, something I dont eat. And I tried to call them back till 11:30pm. Busy and nanswer. So I just 3/4 contactedat 7:08pm to explain my complaint, she refused to reimburse me for those ribs I dont Kathyeat. HO SAI GAI so hard up for money. I would never support them and all my family & friends would never support them. All Because of COVID-19.You guys are mean spirited.
I am from New Jersey and when I lived there do not mind paying the 5.00 toll to get me some amazing Chinese food from this wonderful establishment. My orders include the spicy beef & scallions and the crab fried rice, it is to die for , absolutely amazing to my pallet, my favorite appetizer are the crab ragoons, I think I may be the only person to purchase them on a regular basis, because when I do she remembers me, I have not been there in over 2 years,I moved to the westcoast and the Chinese food here sucks, I hate it but I will be coming home this Friday December 14, 2017 and as soon as get off the airplane this is the first place I will be stopping at , I miss this place so much .
My husband and I come to Philly every year the last three years and this is a must do. The food here is delicious. We go late at night so theres so wait or a million people but that also means there isnt a ton of staff so service is just a tad slow but the food is worth it! Check it out!
Just awful. I ordered wonton soup, an eggroll and the orange blossom duck. The soup was the only good item. The eggroll was too greasy and the duck was covered in a goo of too much cornstarch and sugar. And there was no coordination with the kitchen: right after the soup came out the eggroll came out and then right after the entrée. There was no room on the table for all three at once! I will never return and I do not recommend this place.
Food was bad and overpriced (regular restaurantserves small order put onto a fancy dish with the price tag for something of better quality and flavor). Service was poor -had to get everything myself- the waitress complained about us because she gave us 2 dirty chopsticks.
Extremely rude waiter, no one was in the front door, first time here, so my friend and I went inside. First thing he said is about that, we apologized. After we sat down, “this is how Chinese people react, such an attitude”. Really? I had zero attitude, apologized for our mistake but still very mean to us. The moment we left, he seemed can’t wait for that. Here is something to you, you really represented “taiwannese” really good, low quality.中国人就别去找嘲了 谢谢 有点自尊
I have been going to HSG for close to 18 years now. NEVER had a bad experience. Staff is friendly and treat you like their family. They customize the dishes for you. They serve AUTHENTIC chinese food so if you are used to the americanized, crappy version of what chinese food is from your china keng corner store and add ketchup to everything, this restaurant is not for you.
If there is a negative comment about this establishment there opinion is just that. This has to be the best chinese in philadelphia hands down. I first went to ho sai gai in 1992 at aramingo when i was 4 years old. I grew up going there atleast once every other month. I had alot of time to try just about the whole menu. So they closed the aramingo ho gai and consolidated in center city. The only thing that has changed is the size of the store. THE BEST EGG DROP SOUP IN PHILADELPHIA. You can take that to the bank and cash it. The best beef lo mein in philadelphia. So i walk into the restaurant after maybe 8 years of being away. I order my favs. Everything comes out in record time steaming hot . The best soup and hot tea to help your cold go away. I pay for my bill and the server stares at me and proceeds to ask me how am i doing like i never left. She knew exactly who i was after so long ago seeing being there. It just goes to show you the rapport they establish with all there customers as soon as you walk in the make you feel right at home. So if your ever in china town in philadelphia. This is the place to be.

2022-01-03Ordered pickup from this place yesterday for me and my boyfriend. We both got the lunch specials. Yesterday he found a fly in his soup and today while reheating the leftovers I found a piece of plastic in my food. We called yesterday and they refused to give us a refund or offer a replacement. Very disgusted and disappointed. Will not be returning or recommending to others.

2022-04-01Always a pleasure coming here! The workers are SO welcoming and actually encourage you to try various foods based on what your preference is. The recommendations which they provided (which they gave a lot every time I visit), are all worth it so far. Definitely recommend! Try them out!

2019-01-13Came here due to the high ratings and was not disappointed. Ordered three dishes recommended by the waiter and it was all perfect and tasted like home cooking. The waiter was very friendly and funny, lovely to have a chat with. The place is a bit dated but comfortable and clean.

2022-06-23The food was OK, but the person who served us overcharged us, by almost duble the real value of the bill, I asked her to explain, she barely explained the bill and what she wrote in the bill was illegible. She was dishonest, and I will never visit that restaurant

2018-09-03An excellent classic Chinese restaurant! Everything about this place is great. The food is delicious and well priced. Would highly recommend the fried string beans and bean curd. The waiter is incredibly friendly and helpful. Food came out really fast too. The restaurant is spacious and the ambience is really comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place if youre looking for authentic Chinese food!

2019-02-03Very good place, atmosphere was nice. Its a little drafty by the door. The seating arrangements were a little too tight when you have gift bags etc. The wait staff was very fast and accurate. They were quick and attentive to every details. The food was fresh, crisp and very good. Shrimp egg food young was my order and it was very food. Rice was rich and moist the fried egg was a little dry, but I guess this is how they make it here. The gravey was delicious 🤤. The wait staff forgot my beer 🍻, but he was serving multiple tables it wasnt a big deal. The fried wontons and red sauce was amazing. We didnt have desserts, Id return to restaurant

2019-05-24Food was average. Owners dont know how to calculate/do math...we had to correct him on what he was charging us - we even had to refer him back to his menu and remind him of his price. Chips get reused from one table to the next and I wont be back.
