The food was great i mean phenomenal.. but sadly our waiter G was rude to us from the start .. we were seated on the patio on a Friday evening .. not too busy .. we first arrived and waited 20 min for her ..the host had noticed and asked if she came over yet .. finally she came and got us started with drinks … after avoiding us for another 20 min taking peoples order asking the table next to us if they wanted another drink she was about to proceed past us again I was appalled .. I was literally trying to figure out why she was treating us like that … the host noticed and another lady I think is the manger by the name of heather came to ask if we were ok about time we got our food we let it go … but I just had to come back and make people aware of the disrespect we received for no reason .. my. Cousin took me out after having a bad week and the first time I come out this is what I walk into .. my cousin still tipped and said maybe she was having a bad day but it seemed blatant to me I KNOW FOR A FACT SHE WAS DISCRIMINATING AGAINST US BECUSE OF OUR SKIN TONE .. she was a Spanish or white girl with horrible fillers and a disfigured bbl my the name of G very ignorant to us … and I hope that she changes her ways after seeing this .. she really ruined our night … but the place and food were beautiful .. we went over to this bar called the olde not to far away and the service was and drinks were phenomenal I wish we would of went there first ..
One rating, everyone knows the rules: 7.4Staff was absolutely superb. Rick was our bartender/server at the bar for happy hour and he asked for our names and remembered them. Good happy hour drink selection, great full bar drink selection. Off the happy hour menu, had the mini burgers which I would say were really good (this is the first place Ive been to in a long time that actually cooked the meat perfectly to medium) and the buffalo wings were VERY good (perfectly cooked, had a great crisp to it, medium spiciness, and was perfectly glazed with the buffalo sauce so it wasnt dripping in sauce).Looking forward to going back to try many much more of their menu.
You are going to pay the Curtis building premium of $16 for this cheesesteak. $16, all things considered (downtown, Curtis building and sea salt french fries) is pretty accurate. I liked this cheesesteak but a few things (other than the $16) kept me from loving it. Phenomenal caramelized onions and caramelized onions to meat ratio. The meat/caramelized onions had a great flavor. The warm cheese sauce was good but it needed a whole lot more and it needed to get through more of the cheesesteak. The seeded roll was nice but it was a little bready. I would have preferred a $7 draft beer over my $12 Monk’s Cafe beer even though the Monk’s Cafe beer was very very tasty. Overall pretty good experience.
Went three times for various holiday events. Each time was better than the last. The friendly staff made everyone feel at home. Highlights are Crab Dip, Cheesesteak egg rolls and their chicken pot pie but whatever you choose you cannot go wrong. Its a loud but fun atmosphere.
Well where do I begin. My sister has some dietary restrictions and our server made the request to the chef. I am delighted to say the food was served as requested. I had the half chicken and my sister had the sea bass. The service was wonderful and the pinot noir the bartender chose for me was perfect. To top off our lunch we shared the strawberry shortcake. We will be returning.
Went for brunch today, and it was incredibly disappointing. First, there were only 4 actual brunch items on their brunch menu. Next, the poached eggs in the salmon eggs benedict were not only hard boiled, but also had large pieces of egg shell on them. Brussel sprouts were raw and crunchy, the omelets were flat with minimal filling, and the berry compote on the French toast was like a generic smuckers jelly. I understand the price point is high given the location, but the food quality is well under what it should be for the price point. Please go somewhere else for brunch if you’re in old city, there are much better other options. I will give them credit that our eggs benedict was comped for the egg shell.
An excellent, busy and a little expensive place. I had the tomato soup and the mac and cheese. Both were excellent. My daughter had th hamburger and fries and they were good, but not quite so outstanding. Service was quite and friendly. Prices were high, but this is the tourist district.
Lovely view on the terrace overlooking Independence Hall. I was lucky that they accommodated me without a reservation, as it was close to full. Extremely friendly server and manager circulated to check on each guest and was very welcoming. Beer (Guinness) was poured correctly. I only had an arugula salad with chicken, and it wasnt anything special. The lemon vinaigrette was good, the goat cheese was nice, but the chicken had minimal flavor other than char and included a very fatty / stringy piece visible upon service. There were only three apple slices, and it was granny smith rather than honey crisp, which didnt provide the sweet to contrast as well with the lemon vinaigrette. Still, I would try again based on location and service.
I was blown away...great atmosphere, food and service! We had a hard time choosing what to order, so we ordered a few things and shared with each other. The meatloaf is amazing as were the burgers! I especially enjoyed the Blue BBQ Burger. The oysters were fresh and refreshing and the brussel sprouts were so good.
Everything took way too long and there was nothing complicated about our order. I think these reviews are deceiving. We had a new waiter tonight, who clearly needed more help than anyone could really give him. The food was ok...but the burgers were not worth $20. Best part was the super friendly hostess, who brought our dog water and treats and was super attentive. Other than that, we would have been better off grabbing burgers at 5 guys and eating in the park, and having a $50 dinner rather than $200.
This place is terrific. Ive been here often but just decided to write a review because I was reminded of how great P.J. Clarkes is after I had a bad lunch experience at a different nearby trendy restaurant. So for dinner we decided to go to P.J. Clarkes where we knew everything would be great. The food was terrific as always and the service was outstanding.P.J. Clarkes is the real deal and they stand out from the crowd because they are actually pleased you are there. They want you to enjoy yourself and have a nice experience. They actually care about the customer. That is rare these days.
My first time was a lovely time. The hostess was very professional and polite, and Princess, my server, took excellent care of me. I think this restaurant is attached to the Curtis Building, but not entirely sure. The food was amazing, the meatloaf was Divine, as was the macaroni and cheese with bacon. I was too full for dessert, but the cup of freshly-brewed coffee was supremely delicious. I shall definitely return to this restaurant when I return to Philadelphia.
Had a very poor experience here. Missing items off the menu (what’s a burger restaurant without fries??), absolutely terrible food from what I managed to eat. Tiny wine list. The music is obnoxious. I was deceived by the beautiful space they have, and regret getting a lunch here.Much, much better places at comparable price points are nearby. Also, when I left a negative review elsewhere, the owner or whoever kept badgering me and insulting me. Absolutely unprofessional. Avoid this spot, go to one of the many local philly places that are far better.
Overall, my wife and I like this place. We live nearby, so it is a neighborhood go-to. The ambiance is superb; lighting is subdued, the noise level is nicely controlled, and the spacing between the tables allows diners to have a great deal of privacy. The food selection and quality are excellent, and portions are so large that my wife and I usually split menu items. Prices are at the premium level, on a par with other excellent Philadelphia eateries.
First time here for lunch and it was absolutely wonderful. The staff is attentive and friendly. The food was delicious. Karen was our server and she was so nice. I would like to give an extra shout out to Stephanie who went above and beyond and made me a passion fruit sangria. It was the best sangria drink ever. We will be back!
The staff was really friendly and professional. The food was tasty and I really loved their dessert options. There are only four or five options (plus ice cream), but they span a broad pallet. The music is great and at a comfortable volume so you dont have to yell at the person sitting next to you. Definitely add it to your list
My sister ate lunch there today. It was our first time there. We arrived a little early and Eileen, the manager, IMMEDIATELY welcomed us into the restaurant and offered us water or coffee until it opened. While waiting, Justin, the bartender, also asked if we would like water or coffee while we waited. What a warm welcome we received....but that is typical Philly! We decided to eat at the bar. Justin was very knowledgeable about my favorite kind of wine and had me sample 2 kinds. I ordered the turkey club which was HUGE and delicious. My sister had the reuben. The only complaint was that it was a bit too fatty but overall delicious. Perhaps a leaner cut can be offered in the future. We had a great lunch and will definitely spread the word and return. Atmosphere, food, staff--ALL A++++. Thank you again, Eileen and Justin!
The ambiance is nice, and servers are good. The food was OK at best (cheese steak eggroll looked factory made, size of a hotdog bun...cost $7). We were there for happy hour and spent $65 (pre tip) for 2 people. 1 happy hour drink each, and happy hour apps. It was pricey, and the food didnt taste that good (burgers were ok at best). We wouldnt go back.3 stars for servers and ambiance. They lose 2 stars for food quality and pricing
Stopped in for lunch today, ordered the Classic Caesar salad and added a piece of fresh salmon, also had some of the freshest oysters that i believe came from New York. Everything in my opinion was cooked to perfection the salmon had a crispy outside but a soft tender moist inside. The best part of the experience was that I really appreciated when the chef came out to check on how everything was. I highly recommend this rad venue, has history all throughout the walls and a great lounge center and with a staff that gives you 10/10 service what else can you ask for.
Its a decent place, but far too overpriced. The food and drinks are tasty, and the decor is classy, but youre paying for the decor and location far more than for the consumables. When youre paying upwards of twelve dollars for a stack of pancakes and fifteen dollars for an omelette and hash browns, you know that its not really about the food at that point. Its worth a look once, but bring a very full wallet with you.
The location couldnt be better: in the lovely Curtis Center next door to Independence Hall and Washington Square -- and only a block and a half from my apartment. Ive been there three times now, once for Happy Hour, and twice for a business lunch. The staff is welcoming and helpful. But the food is utterly ordinary in both flavor and presentation. And way over-priced.
The place is nice, but the food.We got cheeseburger, and it was one of the worst cheeseburger I have had my entire life. Service is not also good, but the place and location is very nice. I would say get something very cheap and spend sometimes in there, then find a better place to eat.One stars: 0.5 for location and 0.5 for fries, the fries was top-notch; made from real potato, beautifully cut and nicely fried.I originally rate them as one star, but after eating at cheese cake factory, I realized whats a 1 star burger is. So, P.J. Clarkes deserves 3 stars.
Overrated Big Time!!!! Looks great, but, horrible hostesses..We asked to be called, said 30 mins for a table never got a call / text back! All afternoon & Evening. Cant even get that part straight. Imagine if we didnt look around, and plus we were super hungry from traveling. NEVER EVER!!! They dont even greet customers. They just stare.,like people are UFOs. Dont think this place and 2 people upfront Sat afternoon knows, cares about hospitality, response in this time/ Decade.Stick to Chestnut Street,2nd ave & 4th .These are the best momma & papa restaurants & Biz,that are worth supporting. These chains drop the ball too much. A better biz is more suited, they are not using the location to they advantage, especially with terrible help. So many good, experienced people looking for work
Burgers were dry and our beer was warm by the time it got to the table. It was an unfortunate experience because I had heard so many wonderful reviews and was looking forward to eating here. The staff is still new and undertrained, definitely a lot of first time servers on shift during my meal. The quickest thing that came it was the check, I would recommend checking out Jones at 7th and Chestnut!
First time here was an AMAZING experience. The staff went above and beyond, and the food was like no other. I didnt realize that its also a great place to have private events. I will most definitely be coming back to dine here, and I will be sure to tell all my friends about this place! Awesome establishment.
Birthday dinner with out of town family was amazing!!!!! Our waiter was pleasant and seemed she knew what she was talking about. THE OYSTERS WHERE THE TALK OF THE NIGHT BREATHTAKING.!!! Pricing wasnt bad for 4 the food was definitely worth it. Had a great team of managers and co workers Going back soon. THANKS PJ CLARKES
We did a private cocktail/dinner party for 55 on Wednesday night and it was sensational. We worked by phone with Thea and with Eileen to figure out what we really wanted to happen and it happened exactly that way. Food was great, bar was gracious and staff made everyone feel at home and welcome. Frankly, it was like having a party at home. Oh yes, we are from New York City and were having this party in a foreign city, Philadelphia. For anyone wanting to do such a party, let me aim you at P.J. Clarkes. What nice people. Final note, we stayed absolutely in budget.
The atmosphere and details in this historic building, located at an historic intersection, overlooking Independence Hall and Washington Square, was terrific. The room felt rich, warm, upscale, trendy, and very well thought out. However.... the staff and food quality ruined the evening. We walked in one of the entrances. The hostess looked at us and said “Do you have a reservation...”. It was more of a statement than question, with zero inflection and not preceded by a welcoming greeting. We replied that we did not have one, but would like to sit at the bar. She replied “Do you know where it is?” (Rather than inviting us to follow her, or offering us a customary “enjoy...”) We said, we think so, but when we turned the wrong way, she simply yelled “That’s not the bar... that’s the Walnut room... the bar is down that way.” The only thing missing was her calling us stupid for making such an obvious mistake. After this, we walked down the hall past a number of staff members. All of them were engaged in conversation with one another. We were not greeted by anyone. Once we made it to the bar area, there was another hostess. She was much more engaging and friendly. I informed her of the other person... she apologized and did seem genuinely sorry for the situation (and rightfully, a little angry). We made it to the bar and waited about 5-8 minutes before we were approached by a bartender; although two bartenders were working... one seemed to be concentrating on a shift change task. While we certainly understand shift changes require certain things to be done... the number of staff members in the building and two bartenders standing in front of us, does not justify why we didn’t receive an acknowledgement or water for nearly 10 minutes.Once we did place the order... the food came out without delay. However, the calamari was very poorly executed and far below our expectation. It looked like a bowl of baked panko clumps with slices of peppers mixed through out. Once the squid was eaten, there still remained half a bowl of excess dredging remnants. The wings that were suggested by the bartender (and touted as possibly the best in the city) were not very good. The flavor was too subtle to be considered a buffalo wing. It was a light red pepper sauce that was very thin, and while it was mixed with other seasoning, it did not stand up well against the flavor of the blue cheese dipping sauce (the blue cheese was great though, if this was house made... well done!). We also ordered mussels, which were good - but not good enough to sway our overall disappointment in the food.We were excited for the opportunity to try this place, as we often do not have an opportunity to spend time in the city after work and before we head home with our child. We really loved the look, location and atmosphere of this restaurant. It seems the owners have spared no expense in making this a quality location. My sincere hope, is that they address the deficiencies of their staff members (including the kitchen) before their underperformance causes this restaurant to fail despite its inherent strengths!
Such a lovely place with outstanding ambience and amazing food. First time visiting on weekend. We sat in a room overlooking Washington Square, with the sun shining in. It was a truly lovely experience. Great company, conversation, ambiance, food, service. A great time! 😊
Many thanks to Claire and Anthony!! They saved the day. My mother tripped on the public sidewalk at the corner and cut open her chin. I popped inside to ask for some paper towels. Claire went above and beyond, providing us first aid and a place to sit outside of the rain. Much appreciated!
First time back since the restrictions have been relaxed and probably won’t ever go back. Sat at a broken table the server lied to the manager about having fixed before we were sat. Server showed up 15min after we were sat and did nothing to rectify the broken table until we got up to leave. Didn’t even get a chance to order drinks or food.
The food is okay, but IMO overpriced for what it is. This is pretty standard pub fare, but they add about a 33% premium to the price due to the location. There are better places within a couple of blocks in every direction, I probably wont be back. Service was also so/so.
Stately accommodations with a neighborhood bar feel. We came fot happy and stayed for hours!! Warm nuts are delicious, dont get me started on the oysters, fresh and juicy. Burgers, port ei mbb e cheese, fried oyster roll. We had a great time thanks to all the staff as tgey seem to all pitch in. This is my third ti mb e in and I will be back. I eork across the street😁
After being employed walked out today. And tried to reach the GM but account was already deleted they do a weird pull system with money and I know for sure 2 are stealing from employees. I dont deal with that.and being one of the girls that had me take money the other day and not report in out tips I outted her on my way out. Dont take from your job or employees.!

2021-09-05Initially we thought this was just another bar type of thing with typical American fare in a tourist trap location, so we didnt have high hopes. Well Im glad to say we were wrong. Food quality was good, fresh ingredients. The drinks were quality. Service was excellent, they didnt skimp on the number of waitstaff. The food prices are a little high compared to similar establishments with similar portion sizes, but i didnt mind it at all, since the food quality was nice and the service was great.

2022-05-06Im a neighbor, and despite high prices, mediocre food and service, Ive had a few visits out of convenience. My previous visit will be my last.Sat at the bar for lunch, took 10 minutes to be greeted and given a menu, despite it being quiet. Bartender never said hello, smiled, and made me to feel unwelcome. He continued to give the impression he didnt want to be there, and I was an inconvenience. Was happy to finally leave, and wont be back.

2022-05-09My boss had treated my coworkers and I to a buffet dinner of yummy finger foods in honor of teacher appreciation week. The food was really good, although some dishes that I really liked they only brought out once and did not refill those specific foods.

2022-02-04Love this place...management and bartenders are so amazing!!! Special shout out to Justin (bartender-go see him!!), Danny and Heather....awesome women and very kind!!! I come back for the tasty, as hell, buck-a-shuck oysters, but these 3 are off the chart great!!! Go visit!!

2022-04-21Great atmosphere, but why in the world would you put the $21 “Curtis” on a $2 potato bun?!? It wasn’t even toasted. I got delicious cheese burger on a soggy bun. What a way to ruin a burger. You need a nice toasted Kaiser or Ciabatta

2022-06-07This place earned the 5 star because of Heather. She went out of her way to make a reservation for our party of 5 and make us feel very welcomed. She deserved all the gold stars !!!
