I have been here twice and both occasions I have been disappointed in the food in both the quality and the quantity. Let me start saying that went I order the basil mix chicken and shrimp and didnt want to have white rice, I ask if I could have more vegetal instead, the answer of the server was I am not the chef. Kind of rude, but I let it slide. My food came with tom yum chicken soup, which had no taste and was cold worse I had tasted.Went my main course arrived, I saw that my petition was denied and that not even that, the amount of shrimp was very minimal, and the portion of the vegetable was less than my friends. I ended not eating the dish because I was very disappointed with the food and service that I received. I highly recommended not to eat here or make any request because like the service told me I am not the chef.
My absolute favorite Vietnamese in China town everything is fresh the owners are so sweet and they have a huge menu. The lemongrass shrimp is my favorite So I get it everytime along with another dish! I usually try to sample something new everytime I go and they have yet to disappoint!
Pho Xe Lua, also known by its frequent patrons as ‘Choo Choos’ (take notice of the neon choo choo train on the front window), is a staple restaurant in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. They serve a large menu of Vietnamese and Thai dishes in a relaxed, casual setting. Don’t let the storefront or interior fool you. Simply put, the focus is on the food and it is delicious, and that is why you should make this an absolute must visit. I’ve taken many friends and visitors here, and everyone has commented on how good the food is. You’ll find all the familiar Vietnamese and Thai dishes, as well as some hard-to-find authentic, traditional ones (crispy fried satay frog, anyone?).The consistently good, high-quality, low-price food, makes this a repeat favorite of mine in Philadelphia. You can’t afford not to come here and order a lot of food and drinks. Some of my favorites include Bo Tai Chanh (raw fresh flank steak with lime juice), Goi Bo (papaya salad with beef), Chao Tom (minced shrimp on sugar cane), Canh Thap Cam (house special seafood soup with mixed vegetables), Hu Tieu Mi Xe Lua (Xe Lua egg & rice noodle soup), Bun Gao Xao Bo (stir-fried vermicelli with beef), Pho (extra-large, extra noodles, and all the meats and seafood), Ca Chien Nuoc Mam (deep-fried fish with spices), Lau Viet Nam (Vietnamese hot pot), and I could go on and on. Don’t forget to order a smoothie (get the avocado smoothie) or Cafe Sua Da (French coffee with condensed milk served cold) or a beer. They also have a good number of vegetarian options, and set meals for 2, 4, 6, and 8 people. I encourage you to go with a group of people, order a lot of things from the menu, and share/sample everything. Great food is best enjoyed with great company.
Yesterday’s lunch devours lead me to one of my favorite Phó 🍲 spots in Chinatown. Pho Xe Lua is a Vietnamese restaurant dialing up traditional soups and noodles in a basic setting. Yesterday, I ordered the traditional Seafood pho with no noodles and side of white rice 🍚. I also ordered the snails 🐌 in lemongrass which were absolutely delicious 😋. If you ever find yourself in Chinatown, and wanting traditional Vietnamese foods? Check out Pho Xe Lua! #philadelphia #seafood #philly #crab #shrimp #food #foodporn #foodie #foodstagram #foodphotography #foodblogger #lemongrass #water #ginger
Very good clean authentic food in China town area of Phili. Shrimp pho was flavorful and fresh, huge portion big enough for 2, so I had leftover that I heated for lunch the next day. No shortage of good food in Phili but I definitely recommend this place and would return if I ever get the chance.
Nice little spot in Chinatown on Race Street. Given the location, if youre driving, it will only be street parking (which is fairly typical for Chinatown). We had to circle around a few times before finding a spot that was 2 blocks away from the restaurant. It was a bit chilly out so naturally the walk felt A LOT longer than it was in distance. The cuisine is a medley of Asian options - between Vietnamese and Thai. I think the main draw is the pho (especially on colder nights, such as the one we visited this restaurant.)I didnt see any vegetarian pho options on the menu, so instead ordered their Phad Thai. In hindsight, I think they may have a vegetarian/vegan broth with veggies, but I opted for the noodle dish instead. My other guests did order the pho and were very pleased with the outcome. As for me, the Phad thai was well made (and without egg and mushrooms, per my specifications :]). The dish was savory but definitely required additional spices. I drizzled in a combination of the hoisson, chili oil, and jalepenos to get to a amped up spice level. In addition, we all opted to try their bubble tea! I chose the soybean drink with the tapoica and was pleasantly surprised on how good it was - not too sweet, and complimented the Phad Thai pretty well! The service was very quick (which was awesome since we were all starved!) The place was fairly busy when we arrived, so we hung out for about 10 minutes. This worked out just fine though since we were served our glasses of water and had a chance to look through menu while a table was cleared for us. The waiters were attentive and fairly knowledgeable about the menu items. It did take some reaffirmation that any modifications to the menu items were noted, but other than that the food was prepped to everyones liking.I think this spot works best if you want quality food - fast, coupled with the dine in experience. Would come back and venture for vegetarian pho, and if that is not a possibility, the Phad Thai is still a solid back up plan!
This restaurant was so nice, I had to come back months later to post a positive review. The restaurant was cozy, the staff was attentive and friendly, and most importantly, the food was delicious. My wife and I havent eaten beef, tendon, and rice noodle soup as good as what we had here since we visited Philadelphia. Our expectations for future pho restaurants we visit are higher because of this restaurant. 10/10!
My lucky stars under the Chinese Zodiac sign of Sheep led me here to graze and Im happy! The food is delish, not expensive and the service is impressive. As a gluten free grazer I appreciated that the waiter and Chef took the time to stop by the table and speak to me about options. Ill be baaaa-ck.
This was a great spot that my wife and I got food from. We went in with no expectations and we are completely happy with the portion size, flavors, and services. We got the grilled beef on grape leaves, Thai styled baked shrimp and minced shrimp on sugar cane, bbq pork and spring roll on vermicelli. They are very reasonably priced. We will be back there again.
The food was amazing. I came here with some friends in the spring and the pho was absolutely delicious. The service was great and it was not too pricey. My friends are pretty picky eaters and they still found a yummy meal to eat. In my pho world, it’s in my top 5 favorite places to eat.
I told my friends about this place with my warmest recommendations. I visit this restaurant often. This recommendation is always successful. The the food there is delicious and the stuff is generous and cooperative. Every time we go to this place we enjoy a cheerful time. highly recommended.
The Pho noodle soup is very good very flavorful and they have a very extensive traditional Vietnamese and Cantonese menu. I ordered the medium rare beef pho noodle soup and I also ordered the spicy stewed pork belly which was surprisingly good I will be returning there they have great customer service and a nice clean atmosphere and clean restaurant. The servers were very friendly and shared history about the cuisine and the different dishes served at the restaurant on the menu and the backstory on how the restaurant became what it is today.
Pros: Cheap, okay tasting foodCons: Inattentive wait staff, not the best VietnameseI found this restaurant after looking at the great reviews online. I thought it was okay. Ordered the 301 Bun and my boyfriend ordered a spicy noodle soup. Definitely not the best Vietnamese food Ive had, not enough make me ever really want to go back. Our water was not refilled once (and I was down to ice only), staff blatantly playing on their phones.
We keep going back. Weve tried all the other places that are supposed to be great (the ones on Washington Street, the Vietnam restaurant, etc) but this place is, in our opinion, the most solid value with good food. My kids love the food here, particularly the pork chops. DH and I always get the pho. And the pricing? Extremely reasonable.
Visited this place for dinner on a trip to Philly. The place was packed, but the service was incredibly fast. The prices are more than fair. I ordered their signature pho (101 maybe?) and I ordered an XL. It was way more than I had thought and tasted great. My other friends didnt really enjoy their rice plates though and it did feel kind of cramped where we were sitting sometimes so Ill have to take off a star.tldr; great service, good food, good prices.
My go-to spot for pho, pad Thai, and lemon grass anything. First, the food tastes consistently great. Second, the cost is reasonable for the amount of food. Lastly, food is consistently good almost every time. Place isnt the cleanest but never bothered me. I would recommend this place to anyone.
I’ve been coming here for 10+ years. Amazing food for such reasonable prices. Moved to NYC and have been trying to find a place that had pork chop rice remotely close to as good as Pho Xue Le ... but sadly can’t find one. With every trip to Philly, I always make a stop here for some quality food.
Pho Xe Lua has a very extensive menu, and the staff was attentive. Had the pho with beef and brisket, and a $3 Yuengling. Not too expensive, and a solid meal. Not much for decor or atmosphere in the joint, but if you’re looking for a local spot for a warm bowl and a couple beers, this is it.
Best place in the world! The food wait time is only 5 minutes usually. No. 201 has really good porkchops. No.101 has a really good noodle soup! The staff is freindly. I have been eating here since I was 1 year old and I still have not gotten tired of it! This is the best Vietnamese restaurant in philly!
Great pho and pad thai. I have tried many asian restaurants but Pho Xe Lua is the one I coming back to. The service is great as they always have an entire staff of waiters working around all hours. The food is very inexpensive, comes in huge portions, and is as good as them come. Highly recommended!
July 2015 - Authentic Vietnamese food as they can be. I was disappointed when I drove downtown and found that the restaurant was temporarily closed until July 23 due to vacation, but I had to return to find out what my friend was telling me about. I am Vietnamese and this restaurant served the best pho I had in awhile. The flavor is authentic and tastes wonder. When I came in the restaurant, I smelled the canh chua hot pot aroma and told myself wow, this restaurant must cook some authentic stuff. I wanted to try the hot pot, but decided to go with pho because it was their specialty. Plus, the hot pot was for two people. I ordered the largest bowl of Pho Xe Lua and immediately loved the aroma of the soup when it came out. One thing I do traditionally is taste the soup first with a spoon before adding anything. This is how I tell if the soup is good or not. I was amazed with the flavor and enjoyed the authentic flavor of pho there. The pricing is very good here too. A large bowl costs around $8. You cant go wrong for authentic pho noodle soup and having the largest bowl there for around $8. Cant be beaten. Ive tried many other pho places around Philly and this is going to be my go-to place.
My family and I have been coming to Choo Choos as long as I could remember. We call it that because of the big train 🚂 on The window. The drinks are great BOTH non-alcoholic and alcoholic, the food is amazing, the staff are always super nice. Good prices good portions. Great spot for authentic Vietnamese food.
My wife craves a good pho and having just gone to Hop Sing Laundromat, this place was the highest rated pho place nearby. Its definitely a hole in the wall but we were seated right away and our food came out literally under five minutes. I ordered the well done beef pho and the meat had little fat on it. It was good but I definitely had to add some of the table sauces to it to make it pop more. It wasnt the best pho Ive had but it wasnt bad.
So satisfying!Have a craving for street style Vietnamese? This restaurant is the top choice for satisfying it in Philly. There are fancier Vietnamese restaurants, cheaper ones, or hole in the wall ones out there but none matches Pho Xe Luas down to earth and solid offerings that burst with flavor without being too salty oily.Simple BBQ chicken and pork can tell a lot about the restaurants skills and quality, and PXL passes with flying colors. Charred a bit, marinated well, tender, and juicey. Doesnt use the cheap and fatty parts either.Their sweet drinks are also great; no one does the Che Ba Mau bean & glass jelly drink better than here in the city. Fruit smoothies are not too sweet yet have flavor.
Terrible terrible service. The staff was so rude to us. They asked for 9 dollars in tips and when we refused to pay so much money (Our order was like $6 per person) because it was more than our actual food, the staff misbehaved with us and started to argue. They wouldnt let us leave if we didnt pay. We were really annoyed and didnt want to argue anymore so we just paid them the money and left. I was astounded by how they were forcing us to pay tips more than they deserve. Never going back and would not recommend to anyone. The service was horrifying.
To me this place is legendary. Always just referred to it as choo choos (the sound of a trains horn) due to the neon signage on the outside depicting a train. I had my first bowl of pho when I was a boy many many years ago from here, and I have yet to find a better bowl elsewhere.

2022-04-12This place was so great! Quality of the food was great, and the portions were bigger than expected on the pho even though I didnt order the largest size. I didnt move at all - it was delicious, and our server happily packed it up for me to go.Love how lively it was inside - you can tell there are a lot of regulars, including couples, groups, and individuals dining in, and also via takeout/delivery apps. This was my first time, but my partner grew up in Philly and has loved this place for over a decade - says its somewhat of a hidden gem that locals frequent, but tourists dont necessarily bat an eye at. To me, thats ideal, because sometimes Center City is crawling with convention goers or tourists, and you just need a place to duck into a feel Philly. This spot certainly fit the bill.

2022-01-18The OG Vietnamese restaurant in Philly. I have been coming here for years and it never disappoints. Soup is the perfect balance of flavorful but not too salty. Price is great too.

2022-06-28I come here all the time for pho. It is delicious and the portion sizes are good! Prices are also very reasonable. The service is fast and attentive. This is the spot to go for pho if you’re in Chinatown.

2022-04-02Whenever Im visiting a new place I always try out a pho restaurant with Bún bò Huế. I was a bit disappointed that it didnt have blood jelly even though on their menu they had a photo of Bún bò Huế with blood jelly in it. They give a lot of noodles and a decent amount of meat, but not much garnish. I wouldnt say their Bún bò Huế tasted amazing, but it was decent. Overall I still liked it and they have great customer service!

2021-11-08Good, not great food veggie food. Ordered the veggie pho (118) and the mixed veggies in clay pot (618). Both were pleasant but relatively plain flavored. Service was nice and the meal came quickly, but the food wasnt anything spectacular.

2022-03-11Absolutely disgusting! Worst pho and summer rolls ever! They should be ashamed to serve these types of food. Take your hard-earned money and try somewhere else.

2022-06-26Their Bún bò Huế is good; the soup is flavourful but light enough for a late night snack. A little sad that they don’t have blood jelly in it, but their pork hock pieces are big and soft which makes up for it. Customer service is really great as i was dashing in after 10pm during the staffs dinner time and the chief stops eating to cook me a fresh bowl. Thanks!

2021-12-15Pretty good pho, the broth was the best part. The crispy chicken was unfortunately flavorless though.

2021-09-16Very fast and good service. Pho was good, very large portions and reasonable prices of ~11, only downside was that even the medium raw beef was somewhat tough. Overall good experience!
