Absolutely delicious Portuguese food. A bit pricey for the area, but worth every penny. The paella (paehla) is large enough for 2. Our waiter was knowledgable, spoke English, Spanish, and Portugeuse. We let her pick our appetizers and were not disappointed! The shrimp app was the best and outstanding. Love having great restraunts in the Northeast!
Tio Pepes is a gem. I had been looking for some time for a seriously good Portuguese restaurant. I found it. Tio Pepes. They are as good as anything you would find in Newark Ironbound section, and that is saying a lot.We got 2 trays of their Paella Valenciana and it was OUTSTANDING. Loaded with meats and seafood. The rice was perfect (NOT mushy!). Excellent value for the money. For 130 bucks (takeout) I fed eight people. Yeah, you read that right. Eight people, three of whom had hearty appetites. I still have leftovers.Parking is on the street, and you need to be quick to get a spot. Park on Castor. The bartenders downstairs are...uh...really quite lovely to look at. Behave yourselves guys. :-)You will not go wrong eating here. It is outstanding.
Its a very nice place thier food is amazing so fresh, cooked just the way you ask it to be done. You can enjoy a drink or two or maybe even a few depending on how you are feeling. The service is great they are polite kind and their goal is to please you and make sure you walk out with a smile!
It was not easy to know where the actual restaurant located upstairs from the bar once you enter the solid door and first thing you see is not so welcoming bar. Oval design bar with some chairs and high tops tables around the bar. No decor of any kind. Upstairs is where the main restaurant is. Staffs are friendly and helpful with our food. It is pretty pricey for the neighborhood dining and the ambient needs some updates. The food was was quite disappointing Sadly to say. My seafood dish was over cooked. The shrimps and small lobster was chewy like eating a rubber. The sauce was quite bland for me. Maybe I shouldnt expect so much but when the dish is $30 I expect the my seafood not to be rubbery.
Staff was nice and friendly. $30 for an Overcooked seafood dish. Maybe other dish will be ok. It is disappointing when it was well recommended. Decor need some update, not much expectation since it is a neighborhood bar/restaurant. I wouldnt never think by looking from the outside that the restaurant was there and on upper level. Was an experience but for the price I expected at least the dish should be good.
Tío Pepe restaurant was fair, however no one told me when I made my reservation that the restaurant was on the upper floor. For someone with a disability that wouldve been impossible to negotiate. Although the restaurant itself was clean, the stairs leading to it as well as the waiting lil hallway had a lot to be desired. From the appetizers to the actual serving of the entrees it was too long. There is a fee even for the water. Will I visit them again, probably no.
The restaurant it self is beautiful inside.but the service needs a lot of improvement, we waited around 1/2 hr or more for them to served us, after the serving of the food the waiter didnt come back to ask us if we need it anything. The kitchen help was in another table eating and having their fun while we waited for our food and our waitress decide to join them. After we ate we requested our bill an as disappointed as we were they had the oddasity to add 18% tip .Would I recommend this place ??????Unless you are Portuguese maybe they treat you better. Or you know someone who work there. The place was recommend by a friend who visit the restaurant by an Portuguese acquainted. He started the place is great.well not for me sorry never again.
I am honestly quite disappointed with this place. Its in the city so it makes sense their is no parking, but its not very noticeable. The upstairs is the formal dining from, while the downstairs is more so of dive bar. The waitresses dont speak English so my steak was extremely over cooked. The chorizo was really good. Everything else wasnt great, just decent, so it was way way over priced
A friend of mine went here once & since my husband and I have date night every Saturday we tried this place. The food was good,& the service was good, but waiting 20 minutes after they clearly knew we were finished was way too long. Our dishs were cleared & still waiting for our check was a bit too much.
Im not sure if its the location or the service or the food, but I feel all three are lacking. Location is upstairs while the downstairs is a bar. Almost left because I wasnt sure where it was located. Then service was quite poor as the waitress did nothing but stare at us or hid in the back. Mind you, it was only my friend and I and a party of four during this dinner time. I had the Seafood Paella and nothing struck out to me as special.
Two couples came to celebrate a birthday to try a new place . We did not make a reservation. At the restaurant, upstairs of the bar, we told the host . He suggested three appetizers, we had the octopus, mussels and sausage. Octopus salad in a vinaigrette was excellent. One person who merely tasted the octopus enjoyed the salad. For The others this was truly one of the best weve had. We split two entres - filet mignon and paella. Both were excellent. We had more then enough, and we took the leftovers home. Our host then offered us flan for dessert. A delightful celebration. We all want to return.
I have been here many times, introduced many friends to it as well. The only thing that makes me come back is the food!!! I can not stress enough how bad the customer service is here. The host and servers decided that it was appropriate to comment on the fact and made a big fuss over the fact that i asked tochange my entre because my salmon had absolutely no flavor. My first time ordering salmon here. We caught every look they gave and the attitude the manager gave when he noticed the salmon being sent back. So because they did not know how to properly serve us and make us feel comfortable . My guest turned two me and said can we please never come here again. today you lost two customers and i will inform my friends that i referred here before. So sad. +
UPDATE:While generally the food is of good quality, I would be careful of their fresh fish. Sniff it, check the color - sometimes their fish is a bit on the spoiled end.Old: Unfortunately portuguese restaurants in NE Philly are limited. Tio Pepe has had its ups and downs, but it is back to having good food. I like their Bacalhau, my family likes their Bife a Portuguesa, their Camarao Recheado is also good and light.

2021-06-12The food was EXCELLENT!!!! The staff was extremely polite and nice ... The owner even came over to the table and asked how everything was. Although the parking was a little difficult, the food more than made up for it. Give it a try ... You wont be disappointed! Trust me!

2022-05-20I always forget to write a review but have been coming here for years. I usually always get the same dish and they never fail me. Perfect place to take a lady to wine and dine or just have a beautiful dinner with family or friends.

2022-04-08Perhaps it was the result of inflation, but the paella (spelling incorrect) was noticeably less saffrony than previous visits. Nevertheless, this fine restaurant is well worth the flight of steep steps to the second floor to get there. The Portuguese eat dinner late, so the hours prior to 8pm are prime for us Americanos. The portions are more than generous. Good food, nice folks.

2021-05-23Food is average, expensive and the service rarely attends to you (due to the default charge of 10% tip) bathrooms are extremely dirty because in the first floor there is a bar full of drunk people. The only reason as to why I gave 3 stars was because of what I ordered.

2021-05-25Came to Tío Pepe to celebrate our anniversary. I love their trilingual service(English, Spanish and Portuguese). The ambience is just adorable, makes you feel youre actually in Portugal with their beautiful lampposts on the middle of the room, its kind of romantic if you go on a date like we did, but its also so family friendly as well. Now lets talk food. I ordered grilled salmon with tostones (double fried green plantains) and salad. Salmon was grilled to perfection and moist, tostones were fresh and super crunchy. My husband got a humongous size T-bone steak with steamed vegetables. Steak was juicy, with the right amount of fat and super tender. My husband had the expresso coffee with milk, he stated it was heavenly and tasted even better than Starbucks (he loves Starbucks)The restaurant does encourage their customers to make a reservation ahead of time to avoid agglomeration.Tío Pepe keep up the great work!!

Every colored girl gets really sick after eating. Please be real careful eating at this place. I cant wait to tell the owner for its not his fault. 1st time I fell out. My legs gave up on me.😪😪
